IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
As the essay states that in some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people, which clearly shows the importance of owning your own house rather than ranting, because it gives people a sense of security.
From my perspective it is a positive situation to own your own house because it makes your future secure because you have your own property. Particularly for today generation it is important to buy your own house because of high inflation. For example people nowadays do part time job through which they barely complete their home expenses so if they rent house in today’s time it’s difficult for them to pay their rent and continue their home expenses with rent.
Furthermore some people have large families so it is difficult for them to manage if they rent a house with children study expenses. Renting a house have many problems like tenants may face power outages, poor maintenance and damaged paintwork which is than depend on the landlord when he get a free time he will look after these problems until then the tenants have to face these problems. Another hassle is that for example if you take a house on rent the house owner can ask the tenant to leave it anytime which is then difficult for them to look for a new house in rush.
In conclusion having your own house is a big blessing in today’s time, looking at increasing inflation and how difficult it is to earn money , having your own house is a biggest blessing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention inflation and family needs, the arguments are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'power outages' and 'damaged paintwork' is a specific detail that distracts from the broader economic or social arguments. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more sophisticated reasons, such as long-term financial stability, investment potential, or the psychological benefits of autonomy, rather than focusing on minor maintenance issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is mechanical. You use basic transition words like 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion', but the internal logic within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. For example, the transition from discussing inflation to the specific maintenance issues of a rented house is abrupt. Additionally, the opening sentence is a run-on sentence that repeats the prompt rather than providing a clear introduction. Improving the use of cohesive devices to link sentences more naturally would enhance the overall readability and logical progression of your arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'difficult for them' and 'home expenses'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'ranting' instead of 'renting' and 'today generation' instead of 'today's generation'. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to housing markets, such as 'property ladder', 'financial security', 'tenancy agreements', or 'capital appreciation', and ensure your spelling is accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Renting a house have many problems'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'which is than depend on the landlord'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and apostrophes. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors will be beneficial.
