IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

It is important for some people owning a home rather then renting a home.because owning our personal home is a dream of some people.this is might be a good thing .but if they dont make big amount of money renting a home or apartment is a good option for leaving there life . if they dont have a big bussinuss renting a home is a good option for living .yes is also a solution for owning our home or making our home take the loans from banks or people and returning them slowly which make them easy to make there own home is this case there is a chance if you dont pay the loan you might be bank corrupt which is a negative situation we should be avoid to take loans from banks people like mafia which is very dangerous .first you need to became a successful and responsible" respected" 'wise' man then make your own home by the way renting a home is a good option for them when there salaries are very low once you become successful make our home help poor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 185 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay touches upon the reasons for home ownership and mentions both positive and negative aspects, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack depth. The position is somewhat unclear, and the response lacks a formal structure, such as an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. To improve, you must expand on your points with specific examples and ensure you meet the length requirement to allow for a fully developed argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and arguments logically. The text feels like a series of disjointed thoughts rather than a structured essay. To improve, you should organize your response into clear paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs (one for reasons, one for your opinion), and a conclusion. Use linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'however', and 'in addition' to connect your ideas more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors such as 'bussinuss' and 'bank corrupt'. The word choice is often imprecise, such as 'leaving there life' instead of 'living their lives'. There is little evidence of a range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. To improve, focus on learning collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to housing and finance. Avoid informal phrasing and ensure you use words in their correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, sentence fragments, and incorrect punctuation. For example, 'It is important for some people owning a home' should be 'It is important for some people to own a home'. The use of 'there' instead of 'their' is a recurring error. The sentence structures are mostly simple and often lack proper punctuation, which makes the text difficult to read. You need to focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors.
