IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries buying a house instead of renting one is very important for citizens. There are several reasons of this situation. It is mainly because people see owning a house as a financial stability for their family. I completely agree because this phenomenon motivates people to save money.

Firstly, One of the main reason of this is that owning a house help people to become financial stable. It is because the value of the property increase with the time and people sells at the time of need. For instance, majorty of persons have bought property and sells at the time of their marriage. This helps to remove the marriage burden from the parents.

Secondly, I believe this situation is completely positive. Owning a house reduces the pressure of paying rent every month and motivates the persons to engage their money in saving or in some other business investments. Although, the owner is not required any specific permission from anyone, when they want to do any changes in the house. The example is that the business men face loss in the business unexpectedly but they don't have to pay house rent in the starting of the month. This help to stay motivated and work hard to buy a property.

In conclusion, Financial stability is the main cause of this situation, whereas this also has positive impact on the persons. This is the reason why i am in the favour of this situation and suggests everyone to buy a house for their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding property value increasing is a good point, but the example about selling property for marriage is slightly underdeveloped and lacks clarity. Similarly, the point about business losses is a bit disjointed. To reach a higher band, the writer should provide more detailed explanations and more logical, cohesive examples to support their claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Although, the owner is not required any specific permission'. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and precision to move beyond a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial stability' and 'business investments'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'remove the marriage burden' and 'engage their money'. Additionally, there are minor errors in word form, such as 'majorty of persons' and 'the business men'. The range is sufficient to communicate, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the value of the property increase', 'this help to stay'), article misuse ('the business men'), and awkward phrasing ('they don't have to pay house rent in the starting of the month'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are persistent and occur in both simple and complex sentences. More attention to basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction is needed.
