IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many societies purchasing properties is seen as a major life goal compared to renting. According to my prospective it is a positive situation.

Firstly, why this situation is positive because it is a best way for financial security and long term investment.

People buy homes because they want to save their money in the form of property. In Pakistan and USA the prices of property rise with the passage of time that is way people buy homes and then sale them when they receive reasonable money. Additionally, one of my brothers bought a home 2 years ago by paying 70 lac at this moment the price of his house becomes double.

Secondly, nowadays rented homes are very expensive and many people are unable to pay rent monthly. For instance, if a person gets 2 lac salary per month and the rent of his house is 50k then it will be difficult to manage all things because of inflation. Furthermore, the rent of homes keep increasing since if we have own home then the price of house will be fixed. Having a own home reduce stress and stable our life. In addition, our social status becomes high we receive more honor from society.

In contrast, many people argue that in these days buying home is almost impossible due to high prices. Poor people cannot afford lavish house nowadays. It may cause burden and stress for such kind of people.

Many people keep changing their jobs and their accommodation as a result they may face difficulty in saling their home.

To sum up, having own home enhance our social circle, save our money and we becomes financially stable.

Moreover, it becomes lifetime savings which is good thing and our future becomes more secure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is valued and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is established early on, stating that homeownership is primarily positive. The ideas are supported with personal and general examples, such as property price increases in Pakistan and the USA, and the contrast between rising rents and fixed mortgage payments. However, some arguments, such as the mention of rising social status, remain somewhat under-developed, and the counter-argument regarding housing affordability is introduced rather abruptly. Overall, all parts of the prompt are addressed competently, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Basic cohesive devices are utilized, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In contrast', and 'To sum up'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or faulty, as seen in the phrasing 'why this situation is positive because it is a best way', which disrupts logical flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to divide distinct points, but the progression within paragraphs could be smoother to reach higher bands.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'financial security', 'long term investment', 'inflation', and 'accommodation'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'purchasing properties', 'according to my prospective' instead of 'perspective', 'sale them' instead of 'sell them', and 'have own home' instead of 'own a home'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited control over less common lexical items, fitting the Band 6 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional clauses and relative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several recurring errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the rent of homes keep increasing'), missing articles ('is a best way', 'Having a own home'), and awkward phrasing ('stable our life'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally maintained, and despite the frequency of errors, they rarely impede the overall communication of ideas.
