IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In some countries, owning a home is more important than renting home for people.
there are many reason to buy there own home. In my opinion , it is a positive situation. but also have disadvantages.
on one hand, the main reason is that people want their own home because they dont worry about rent . they can live same place in many years and provide a stable envirnoment for their families. and house is a good investment because property are increase time by time and we can decorate or change their homes according to their own wishes.
I believe that owning a home is mostly positive. It gives people a feeling of independence and safety. After paying for a house, people can enjoy living there without paying monthly rent. A home can also become an important financial asset for a family. For example, parents can leave their property to their children in the future.
However, buying a home can be difficult because houses are usually expensive. Some people may need to take a large loan, which can create financial pressure. Despite this, I believe the long-term benefits of owning a home are greater than these problems.
In conclusion, people prefer to own homes because of security, independence and financial benefits. Although buying a house can be expensive, I consider home ownership a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and discussing whether it is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the response has a few limitations. First, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the essay contains only 225 words. Additionally, the ideas, while relevant, are somewhat repetitive and could be extended further. For example, the point about a stable environment is touched upon but lacks deep elaboration. Because the word count falls short of the minimum and ideas are slightly underdeveloped, the essay fits best into the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a basic structural organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are short and slightly disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'on one hand', 'I believe', 'However', and 'In conclusion', but their application is sometimes mechanical or basic. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression from sentence to sentence occasionally stalls due to abrupt transitions. Overall arrangement is coherent enough to follow the writer's argument, but the lack of smoother cohesive links places this criterion firmly at a Band 5.5 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, covering common concepts related to housing, investment, and financial security. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'financial asset' and 'independence', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and morphology, such as 'property are increase time by time' instead of 'properties increase in value over time' and 'dont worry about rent'. Spelling errors like 'envirnoment' also occur. While communication is not severely impeded, the range is limited and recurrent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('property are increase'), punctuation ('In my opinion , it is a positive situation. but also have'), and capitalization ('there are many reason'). Simple sentences tend to be more accurate, but attempts at complex structures frequently result in errors. These errors can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar performance with Band 5.0 descriptors.
