IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many parts of the worl, buying a house is much better than staying in a rented home. This is mainly because people want financial safety and a stable place for living. In my opinion, even though buying a house is expensive, this trends a postive thing because it help people to save money and bring stability in their lives.

On the one hand, there are two main reason to buy a own house. First, its a smart financial choice. When you rent, money goes to landlord and never come back. However, when youpay for your own house, you are investing in an assest that will belong to you in future. Secondly, owning a home give people a peace of mind. No tension of monthly rents to owners and renters always worries about landlord raising the rents and asking them to move out. Homeowners do not have these worries to change the house of rent problem they live their lives accordance to them.

On the other hand, I believed that this situation is important of both individuals and society. Individuals working hard to buy house teaches them to save money to buy a house in future. As a year pass, houses become more valueable, which give families a financial security. For instance, people owning a house stay more than rented individuals and able to know about society and makes bonding with neighbour.

In conclusion, people want to buy own home because it make them feel safe and are financilay secure. Although, buying a house cost a lot of money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and stating a clear position that it is a positive development. In the introduction, the writer outlines reasons such as financial safety and stability, and later elaborates on investment potential and peace of mind. However, some ideas are underdeveloped and repetitive, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about saving money and financial security are reiterated without significant extension. Furthermore, the conclusion is incomplete and trails off abruptly. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance. Paragraphing is attempted, with distinct introduction, body, and conclusion sections. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes faulty, mechanical, or awkward, as seen in transitions like 'On the one hand' followed confusingly by another 'On the other hand' instead of a contrasting viewpoint. Additionally, referencing and pronoun use can be imprecise, such as 'this trends a postive thing' and the abrupt ending of the essay without a fully rounded conclusion. These issues place the response at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic ideas about housing and finance. There are several attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'financial safety', 'investing in an asset', and 'valueable', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors ('worl', 'postive', 'assest', 'financilay') and inappropriate word choices (e.g., 'change the house of rent problem'). While meaning is generally clear despite these lexical and spelling inaccuracies, the frequent errors prevent the score from rising above Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional-like structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('owning a home give', 'it make'), missing articles ('buy a own house', 'to buy house'), and tense inconsistencies ('when youpay'). Punctuation and phrasing errors also occur regularly, such as 'this trends a postive thing'. Because these errors require some effort to decode and occur consistently across the text, the performance aligns with Band 5.0.
