IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Having a personal home is desirable for individuals in some cities, rather than paying rent every month. This can be related to several financial and social factors, and I believe that this is generally a positive development.

One of the main reasons of people place great importance on home ownership since it can provide financial security. Unlike tenants, homeowners do not have to worry about rising rental costs or the possibility of having to move because their landlord wants to sell the property. Furthermore, a house can be considered a long-term investment and may increase in value year by year. For example, people who purchase a property at a relatively young age can benefit from its increased value in the future and potentially leave it as an asset for their children. Therefore, owning a home can provide both financial stability and greater security for families.

Another important reason is the sense of stability and personal freedom that owning a home can provide, Homeowners have greater control over their living environment and can make changes to their property without needing permission from a landlord. In addition, having a permanent place to live can be particularly beneficial for families, as it provides children with a stable environment while also creating a sense of belonging to a community. For these reasons, home ownership can have significant personal and social benefits.

In conclusion, people may prefer owning a home because it offeers financial security, stability and greater control over their living environment. Although purchasing property can involve considerable financial commitments, I believe that the long-term benefits generally make home ownership a positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. The candidate considers why home ownership is important, citing financial security and personal freedom, and clearly states a position that this is a positive development. Ideas are well developed and extended with relevant explanations, such as mentioning protection from rising rental costs and providing a stable environment for children. The conclusion reinforces this stance clearly. While some points could be explored in even greater depth, the response satisfies all the requirements for Band 7, as a clear position is maintained throughout with well-supported arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction to financial reasons, personal/social reasons, and a well-synthesized conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'For these reasons' are used effectively to connect ideas, although there is a minor comma splice error in the third paragraph ('provide, Homeowners'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing that meets the requirements for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, such as 'financial stability', 'long-term investment', and 'living environment'. There are successful attempts to use less common items like 'appreciate in value' equivalents and 'sense of belonging'. However, there is a minor spelling/word choice slip in the conclusion ('offeers'), and some collocations are slightly standard rather than advanced. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings without impeding communication, fitting the Band 7 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses ('people who purchase a property') and conditional or concessive elements ('Although purchasing property can involve...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of grammar and punctuation is generally good. A minor punctuation error occurs in paragraph three with a comma splice ('provide, Homeowners'). Another minor slip appears in the second paragraph ('One of the main reasons of people place...'), where the phrasing is slightly awkward. Despite these occasional non-systematic errors, the majority of sentences are accurate, easily earning a Band 7.
