IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many countries, purchasing a home is considered more desirable than renting one. This is mainly because home ownership provodes financial security and sense of stability. In my view, this is a positive development, despite the financial burden that purchasing a property can create.
There are several reasons why owning a home is highly valued in some societies, one important factors is financial security.Unlike renters, homeowners can regard their property as a long-term investment, particularly if house prices increase over time. For example, someone who purchased a property in developing urban area may be able to sell it for considerably more several years later. Therefore, owning a home provide accomodation and valube finnacial assets.
I believe that this preference for home ownership is largely a positive development. First, owning a property can reduce people's financial uncertainty in the long term because they are not dependent on changong rental prices. In addtion, homeowners have greater freedoms to modify oroperties according to their needs. For instance,a family can renovate their home and make strategic changes without needing permission from the landlord. As a results, home ownership can improve both financial stability and quality of life. Admittedly purchasing a home can place a considerable financialnpressure on individuals, However,i belive thatvthe long-term benefit outweight this disadvantage.
In conclusion, people may place greated importance on owning a home because it offers financial security, stability and greatwr control over their living enviroment.Although buying property can be financially demanding, On my view thatbhome ownership is a postive aspect overall because of its long-term benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear opinion on whether this is a positive or negative situation. The main ideas, such as financial security and freedom to modify properties, are extended and supported with examples like renovations. However, there is a penalty applied because the word count is 249 words, falling just one word short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Despite this minor length penalty, the position is clear throughout, and the arguments are well-developed. Therefore, it meets the standard for a solid band 6.5, rounded to a 6.0 due to the length shortfall impacting task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the reasons for owning a home and the evaluation of this trend. Cohesive devices are used, such as "First," "In addition," and "In conclusion," though some punctuation and spacing issues affect cohesion locally. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression is easy to follow, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5, which rounds to a 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "financial security," "long-term investment," and "strategic changes." However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including "provodes," "accomodation," "valube," "finnacial," "changong," and "postive." Additionally, typographical errors like missing spaces ("societies, one") and capitalization issues ("On my view thatbhome") detract from the overall lexical control, keeping the score firmly at a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct conditional and relative clauses, such as "someone who purchased a property in developing urban area may be able to sell it..." However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, including missing articles ("in developing urban area", "provide accomodation"), comma splices, and run-on structures like "Admittedly purchasing a home can place a considerable financialnpressure on individuals, However,i belive thatvthe long-term benefit outweight this disadvantage." These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.
