IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

its often argued that owning a home rather than renting one is very important .some people believes that owning a personel home is very useful rather than rented home .and some ask renting system is good option .i believed that own home is best option than rented home .i will discuss my positive points with exaples and situations below that .own home is posituive point

firstly i support my opinion and point by giving examples and positive points of own home .if any person has his own home he can save money of monthly rent and can pursue his business or use this money of rent saving in any other benificial activity .like small business or shopping .rented home is risky owner of home can refused rented family to live in his home at any time and they cannot argued because he is owner of his hime so rented home is very risky and costly rather than own home.so i prefer own home rather than rented home .

secondly i polishes positive point by giving some instances own home is very save option both livingly and costly nby own homne we can live in our home freely and easily and we can save rent moner and use it in other home expences like school fees utility bills electricity bills or gas bills .so owning a home is very benificial and crucial rather tham rented home

to sum up,owner of home is free to take action on renters in the case of any loss of home and the rtented person should be payed it.and if any perspon have his own home he camn lived in it freely .so own home is very very save and positive option rather than rented home

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the two parts of the prompt: why homeownership is important and whether this is a positive or negative situation. The writer takes a clear position, stating that owning a home is the best option and viewing this as a positive situation. Ideas are presented, such as saving money on rent and avoiding the risks of eviction, which directly relate to the prompt. However, the development of these ideas is quite repetitive and lacks depth or extended analysis. The arguments are stated simply without strong examples, fitting the Band 5 descriptor where ideas are limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks basic punctuation and capitalisation throughout, making the overall structure difficult to follow at first glance. Although paragraphing is attempted with words like 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'to sum up', the sentences within these paragraphs run together due to a lack of full stops. Cohesive devices such as 'and', 'so', and 'like' are overused in a repetitive and mechanical manner, and referencing is sometimes unclear. There is no clear overall progression of ideas, as the same points regarding rent savings and landlord risks are reiterated across multiple paragraphs. This corresponds to a Band 5 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent misuse of terms such as 'livingly', 'moner', and 'rtented person'. Words like 'home', 'rent', and 'positive' are repeated constantly throughout the text. There are numerous spelling errors including 'personel' instead of 'personal', 'benificial' instead of 'beneficial', 'refused' instead of 'refuse', and 'save' instead of 'safe'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning, the high frequency of errors and lack of control over word choice and spelling place this firmly in the Band 4 to Band 5 range, leaning towards a generous 5.0 for attempting some topic-related vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of simple or poorly linked clauses joined by conjunctions like 'and' and 'so'. There is a complete absence of standard punctuation, with sentences running into one another without periods. Complex structures are rare and, when attempted, are faulty in construction, such as in 'if any person has his own home he can save money...'. Errors in verb agreement, tense consistency, and word form are very frequent and constantly impede the reader's understanding. This performance reflects the Band 4 descriptors.
