IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In this paragraph we are discussing about the owning home and renting home. We need to explore about the positive and negative impect about it.

One the one hand we can see that if we are living at own home then we are free from rent, But at the same time we can do changing in our own home and we can renoviate our home as we want. If we are living own home then we can clean it and we can take care of each and everythings,In own home we can changes all those things as we want. In own home we are free from so many expences, In our own home we can use all the portions of our home.

One the other side If we are living in the rental home then we need to live with the owner specificiations,In the renting home we can pay some extra funds for our relaxing and for living, Because in the rental home we can face all time any kind of fears when honer can change his mind set. One the other hand if we are living with the rental home then we can invest our funds in some business and then we can pay for it. If we want to chang some thing then we need to ask about it frome the owner.

I think own countries home is more benificial as compare to the rental home. So we can spent some time in the rentail and own home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the task, exploring why homeownership is important (freedom from rent, renovation flexibility) and discussing the situation as beneficial overall. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the points about changing the home and avoiding expenses are restated several times using very similar phrasing, such as 'we can do changing in our own home and we can renoviate our home as we want' and 'we can changes all those things as we want'. The position is stated at the end, but the reasoning remains underdeveloped and lacks specific supporting examples. This performance aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors, as the task is addressed only partially with limited and repetitive ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows some organisational structure with a basic introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides, and a brief conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow between sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent use of 'One the one hand', 'One the other side', and 'One the other hand' to introduce points interchangeably. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the body paragraphs is disrupted by disjointed, run-on sentences and a lack of smooth transitions. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the conclusion. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5, where organisation is visible but progression is weak and cohesive devices are inaccurate or overused.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted to everyday terms such as 'home', 'rent', 'money', and 'living'. There are noticeable lexical errors and incorrect word choices throughout the text, including 'impect' for impact, 'renoviate' for renovate, 'expences' for expenses, 'honer' for owner, and 'benificial' for beneficial. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'specificiations', but incorrect collocations and spelling mistakes impede clarity in places. There is also unnecessary repetition of basic words. This vocabulary profile corresponds to Band 4, as the range is basic and repetitive, with frequent errors that strain the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences rely on simple structures joined by coordinating conjunctions, and attempts at more complex sentences, such as conditional or relative clauses, are frequently faulty or incomplete, as seen in 'If we are living own home then we can clean it and we can take care of each and everythings'. There are pervasive errors in tense usage, preposition choice, and article omission, such as 'discussing about the owning home' and 'spent some time in the rentail and own home'. Punctuation is also weak, with comma splices present. Because errors are frequent and occasionally obscure the intended meaning, this falls into the Band 4 category.
