IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very essential for individuals. This is because it provides long-term financial security and autonomy. I think this is a positive development because gives self satisfaction and stability.

One of the major reasons why people want to own a home is financial freedom. It is believed that owning a home is a financial asset which can be monetised later in future. Also, it saves an individual from paying rent to the landlord. In addition, autonomy is another reason why it is important to own a home. This is because it gives people the liberty to do whatever they feel like in their homes such as painting, designing, reconstructing without an approval from the landlord. For example, a man who owns a home is not under the obligation of the landlord , he has full control of his house. As a result, owning a home can be likened to as an investment.

I think this is a positive situation because it gives self satisfaction and stability. Nowadays, owning a home is a great achievement to people because they are judged based on the property they posses. Furthermore, stability is one the effects of owning a home. This is because people do have the fear of moving from one home to another. For example, a married man will be excited to talk about his own home among his mates. Therefore, owning a home prevent people from quit notice from the landlord.

In conclusion, some individuals believe that owning a home is very important than renting. This is because it gives them autonomy and prove long-term financial security. I think this is a positive change because it provides stability and satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and clearly stating a position that this is a positive development. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as financial freedom, long-term security, and autonomy. For instance, you explain how owning a home eliminates the need for landlord approvals for renovations like painting and designing. However, some ideas tend to be slightly repetitive, particularly the discussion around stability and avoiding quit notices from landlords, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band level. Overall, you have covered the requirements of the task adequately, maintaining a clear position from beginning to end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as financial reasons in one paragraph and stability in another. Cohesive devices are employed to connect your thoughts, using phrases like 'One of the major reasons', 'Also', 'In addition', and 'For example'. However, referencing and transitions are at times a bit mechanical, such as 'This is because it gives...', which is repeated frequently throughout the response. Furthermore, some sentences lack smooth integration, but the logical flow remains generally intact and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating useful terms such as 'financial freedom', 'monetised', 'autonomy', and 'long-term financial security'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, although some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural, such as 'gives self satisfaction' instead of 'provides personal satisfaction', or 'prove long-term financial security' instead of 'provides'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to understand your arguments without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your essay, utilizing subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'This is because it provides long-term financial security and autonomy.' There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'owning a home can be likened to as an investment' (incorrect preposition usage), 'owning a home prevent people' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'one the effects' (missing preposition). Punctuation is mostly acceptable, and despite these persistent errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and your grammatical mistakes rarely impede communication.
