IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays people prefer to own a house rather than renting. In some countries owning a house than renting is very crucial for humans. This might be due to the expenses of appartment. I would argue that it is a negative situation. Because, in case we do not like the environment there we can not change it.

Nowadays, people love to explore the world. So if they have to live any part of the country they have to rent appartment rather than owning a house there. Owning a house also costs a lot of money and time such as paperwork and others. For instances if we own a house in every single part of the world it will be much more expensive and waste of our money. Additionally, we wil worried about the house after we left. however, if we rent a house it costs little amount and hav not worried about the house after we left.

However, owning a house is crucial for those we dislike traveling and want to live their forever. Owning a house means no money was charged for damage and extra use. Furthermore, we do not get scold by the owner because we own the house. Also, we do not have to pay every month. Owning means full freedom and comfort. And we can also design it as we want and change what we want.

In conclusion, it is a negative situation because they love to travel across the world that why owning a house is not suitable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying why owning a home is important and offering a clear position that it is a negative situation. Ideas are presented, such as the financial burdens of homeownership and the lack of flexibility, but they lack sufficient extension and support. For instance, the argument that owning a house means we cannot change the environment is overly generalised and lacks deeper elaboration. The development of ideas remains somewhat superficial, and the conclusion simply restates the position without fully summarising the preceding arguments. Consequently, the response aligns best with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 profile, where relevant ideas are present but under-developed, leading to a Band 6.0 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic logical organisation with a clear stance stated in the introduction and reiterated in the conclusion. However, paragraphing is problematic; the second paragraph is excessively long and crams multiple disparate ideas together, ranging from travel to maintenance costs, before switching to the counterargument in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, as seen with the frequent use of 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Also'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'after we left'. Overall arrangement is coherent enough to follow, but the structural and cohesive flaws place this performance firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, but it features noticeable errors and repetition. Words like 'appartment' are misspelled, and lexical choices such as 'expenses of appartment' and 'we do not get scold by the owner' show weak control of collocation and register. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'crucial', 'freedom', and 'environment', but the overall range is limited, and errors in word choice ('wil worried', 'little amount') cause occasional distraction for the reader. These features reflect the descriptors for Band 5.0, where vocabulary is minimally adequate with noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('So if they have to live any part...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, including 'owning a house than renting is', 'we wil worried', 'hav not worried', and 'those we dislike'. Punctuation and article usage are also faulty throughout the text. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at complex structures frequently result in errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5.0 descriptors.
