IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In various nations, people prefer to buy a house rather then paying monthly rents for an accommodation. There are two main reasons that why they choose to have their personal house- for investment and comfort. I personally think that this is a positive trend.

One compelling reason that why citizens opt to purchase a house instead of renting is that properties are getting valuable with the time and they want to spend their valuable money into a self growing assert. Consequently, after few years the property's value could increase that would eventually provide them a significant benefit. For example, about 60% of Surrey population have had invested in houses and apartments that would give them an extra profit and money if they plan to sell them today.

Secondly, house is a place where everyone try to comfort themselves. Specially youth, they want to renovate or organize their mini house according to their likes and dislikes. Because of this, they prefer to have their own house that they can modify according without any restrictions. They call this place as their dream house and live their life with comfort and choice. For instance, a famous American vlogger just recently gifted herself a house after living in a rented properly for years. She also suggested her fans that is they want to live happily, have their own house.

From my opinion, this is a great shift because it fosters the sense independency and reliability in life. Additionally, it also help people to secure their future especially in old ages because they would have a place to stay without any stress even after retirement.

In conclusion, having your own house helps people to save money and they can live their life happily.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by explaining two main reasons why home ownership is important (investment and comfort/personalization) and clearly stating their position that this is a positive trend. Ideas are extended with explanations and examples, such as referencing the Surrey population or vloggers. However, some arguments lean slightly toward generalisation, and the example regarding Surrey lacks specific nuance. Nevertheless, the position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. Because the response is well-structured and fully covers the prompt requirements, it aligns well with Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs covering reasons and evaluation, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One compelling reason', 'Secondly', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly awkward (e.g., 'One compelling reason that why citizens opt...'), and paragraphing, while present, could feature smoother transitions between ideas. The logical progression is clear overall, placing the essay comfortably at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items like 'compelling reason', 'self growing assert' (asset), and 'renovate'. There are, however, noticeable word-choice errors and typos, such as 'then paying' instead of 'than paying', 'personal house' instead of 'own house', 'assert' instead of 'asset', and 'properly' instead of 'property'. Additionally, phrasing like 'from my opinion' should be 'in my opinion'. These vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the essay to achieve a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses ('houses and apartments that would give them an extra profit') and conditional ideas. However, grammatical errors occur with some frequency, such as double wh- words ('There are two main reasons that why they choose...'), missing articles or incorrect prepositions ('with the time' instead of 'over time'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('it also help people'). While these errors are noticeable, communication is rarely impeded, demonstrating control typical of a Band 6.0 performance.
