Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive situation. However, the ideas remain quite superficial and underdeveloped, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about investment and financial security are repeated without sufficient expansion. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 205 words compared to the required 250 words. This under-length impacts the overall development and completeness of the task. While a clear position is stated, the lack of depth and the significant word count penalty prevent the score from reaching higher bands. To improve, you need to write more fully developed arguments with specific examples and ensure you hit the 250-word minimum.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive arguments and very short, underdeveloped paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and repetitive manner, such as 'TO BEGIN WITH', 'IN ADDITION', and 'TO CONCLUDE'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are too brief and lack internal cohesion, often consisting of disjointed sentences that do not flow smoothly. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structure lacks the sophisticated linking required for higher band levels. To achieve a higher score, you should organize your ideas into cohesive, well-developed paragraphs with a wider variety of transitional phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, such as words like 'house', 'renting', 'money', and 'buy'. There are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'UOCOMING' instead of upcoming, 'HAOUSE' instead of house, 'HOUSEHOLD' used incorrectly to mean a house or property, 'SAT' instead of say, 'BROKEN' used colloquially to mean broke, and 'FOUSHOLD' and 'FOT THE REST OF PROPLE LIFES' in the conclusion. These lexical errors and limitations mean the range is minimally adequate for the task. To improve, you should expand your vocabulary with more precise academic synonyms and carefully check your spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentences and basic structures, with limited attempts at complex forms, which are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('OWN HAOUSE'), incorrect prepositions, and agreement issues. Additionally, the entire essay is written in uppercase letters, which is inappropriate for an academic essay and demonstrates poor control over punctuation and conventions. While some simple sentences are grammatically correct, the frequency of errors and the lack of a wide range of structures keep this criterion at a lower band. To improve, focus on mastering complex sentence structures and proofreading your work for basic grammatical accuracy.
