IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This is somewhat i can relate to,
Most people in our country like to buy their own Homes as oppose to living in rented houses as owning a property gives a sense of relief, you know that no one can kick you out and even if you lose the job or your business flops you still have some place to live. because these are developing second world or third world countries the government does not provide much facilities to population they have no surity of jobs and other things, where as in UK and other european countries govt provides different schemes so that even if someone goes bankrupt or goes out of job the government supports them till they find a job, this way they can pay their rent and live peacefully you are sure to have atleast some income to pay for your basic needs in life.
i think this is the biggest reason people tend to buy property than living in a rented one.
As for the opinion on positive or negative situation:
I think it depends where you are living in the world,
if a person is living in a country where he knows govt will support him till his death will pay for his rent in his retirement age aswell the person would like to live in a rented house and would like to spend money on different aspect of life.
but in these third world countries where the government provides nothing, its better to own some house so that in your bad day's or retirement times you have some place to live atleast.
so it totally depends on the situation where you live.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, explaining why homeownership is valued and discussing whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat informal and relies heavily on conversational asides, such as "you know that no one can kick you out" and "this is somewhat i can relate to." The position is discernible—arguing that homeownership depends on the socio-economic context and the level of government support available—but it lacks formal academic structuring. The comparison between developing nations and the UK is relevant, yet the ideas remain slightly under-developed due to a lack of precise examples. The response meets the task requirements adequately, but the informal tone and limited depth place it securely within Band 5.5 to 6.0 territory, ultimately earning a 5.5 for failing to fully develop the arguments in a suitably academic manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
Coherence and cohesion present noticeable weaknesses. The text suffers from poor paragraphing and a lack of proper punctuation. For example, the entire first body paragraph is a massive, run-on sentence containing multiple clauses strung together with conjunctions and comma splices, such as "because these are developing second world or third world countries the government does not provide much facilities to population they have no surity of jobs and other things, where as in UK...". There are very few formal cohesive devices used effectively, and referencing is sometimes unclear. The overall progression of ideas feels disjointed, with abrupt transitions like "As for the opinion on positive or negative situation:". Consequently, the structural organisation falls short of Band 6 standards, warranting a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource is basic and repetitive, frequently using simple vocabulary such as "things," "place," "house," and "money." There are several noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as "provide much facilities" instead of "provide many facilities," and "surity of jobs" instead of "job security." The student also uses informal phrases like "business flops" and "bad day's." While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, the frequent reliance on simple terms and imprecise word forms prevents the response from achieving a higher band. These persistent errors in word choice and lack of a flexible, wider range mean the vocabulary aligns best with the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical range and accuracy are severely impacted by pervasive punctuation errors, run-on sentences, and a lack of capitalization. The text contains numerous comma splices and missing periods, creating long, breathless sentences that are difficult to parse, such as "if a person is living in a country where he knows govt will support him till his death will pay for his rent in his retirement age aswell the person would like..." While there is an attempt at complex structures using conditional clauses ("if a person is living..."), these structures are frequently faulty and lack grammatical control. Errors are very frequent and often cause strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 4.5.
