IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries, some people have thier own house and some people have to pay the rent every month of a year. people who living in a rented house have some reasons , according to me owning a house is good.

on the one hand , People who have their own house in cities are relaxed as comparative to those who pay rent oing of they have no worry of paying rent every month they can save money for extra needs. For exapmle , they can spend that money in their busniess they can raise thier children easily. they have no worries if anything happpens to house becsause it is their own thing and. One main thing, is that they can enjoy the freedom of life withour that fear that house ownner might ask them to leave his house immediately.

On the one hand, people who lived on the rented house have many tensions. For exapmle,if the date of rent expired then house owner yells at them to pay the rent on time. If they are leaving the house they also have to renovate the entire house and handover the owner in that condition no one ever lived in this house.

In my opinon ,owing a house is a positive think in any country it hels us a lot in any condition like, busniess, or in any unexpected conditon.People who pay the rent to leave in houses have many businesss to settle related to house like clenanig, paying rent on time.

At las ,the advantages of owning a house are outweigh the people who leave in rented house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is valued and giving a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as financial security, reduced stress, and personal freedom compared to renting. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the points about saving money and avoiding landlord conflicts are reiterated in different sections without deep elaboration. Furthermore, the second body paragraph is mistakenly introduced with 'On the one hand' instead of contrasting ideas. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of the prompt, earning a band score of 5.5 for task achievement due to the under-developed nature of some arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization and attempts paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted. Notably, both body paragraphs begin with the identical phrase 'On the one hand,' failing to create a proper contrast. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions ('One main thing, is that...') and sentence fragments ending mid-thought ('...because it is their own thing and.'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making the flow disjointed at times. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion lacks control, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, utilizing common words such as 'house,' 'rent,' 'money,' and 'business.' There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'thier,' 'comparative' instead of 'compared,' 'exapmle,' 'busniess,' 'happpens,' 'becsause,' 'ownner,' 'without' spelled as 'withour,' 'opinon,' 'owing' instead of 'owning,' 'think' instead of 'thing,' 'hels,' 'conditon,' 'clenanig,' and 'las.' These errors are frequent and noticeable, though communication is generally maintained. This performance aligns with the descriptors for a band score of 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. Frequent errors include missing capitalization at the start of sentences and after full stops, incorrect verb forms ('people who living'), awkward phrasing, and run-on sentences with excessive commas or conjunctions. Punctuation is often faulty, creating incomplete clauses like '...it is their own thing and.' While the meaning can mostly be understood despite these issues, the high frequency of grammatical errors and punctuation flaws restricts the score to a 5.0.
