IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In most countries having a personal residence is prefered instead of a rented place. in my perspective, this is a very interesting development showing a positive development.

First of all, people are more interested in owning homes, so they tend to avoid renting buldings that require a monthly payment. owing houses gives people a sense of contentment that they belong to that place. Especially immigrants who left their country, allowing them to pursue better living conditions. For instance, owning a home gives the individual greater advantages, which are long-financial stability and the freedom to customize their home however they like to.

Secondly, pesronal property provides strong community roots, allowing them to buils stronger relationships over the time. Although personal property is convenientt,it can be pretty expensive. If the government reduces the cost of buildings, more people may welcome the idea of owning homes. For instance, tax exemption for elderly people and tool lending libraries, which are essential for strengthening neighbourhoods.

As a result, the people owning houses in these type of neighbourhoods, allows them to experience better living conditions.

Overall, having personal housing has more advantages than disadvantages. Altough, renting is more popular among students, allowing puipils to rent small apartments in big cities. This gives students access to a lot of facilities. But still it is extremely expensive to live in a city apartent and owing a home in a city is way cheaper. Because it cuts off alot of other exenses.

In conclusion, Owning a house is a positive developmeny

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring why home ownership is important and stating a clear position that it is a positive development. Ideas are presented regarding financial stability, emotional contentment, and community roots, though some arguments are rather briefly developed. For instance, the mention of immigrants or elderly tax exemptions introduces relevant points, but they are not fully expanded with thorough explanations. While the ideas are relevant and cover all requirements of the prompt, the level of development and extension corresponds best to a Band 6.0 performance, where some parts are more fully addressed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas, although some paragraphs are slightly disjointed. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'As a result', but referencing is occasionally unclear, and some transitions feel mechanical. For example, the sentence 'As a result, the people owning houses in these type of neighbourhoods, allows them to experience better living conditions' breaks the logical flow due to structural errors. Overall organisation is present, but progression is sometimes hindered by clunky transitions, fitting the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'contentment', 'customise', and 'tax exemption'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'prefered', 'buldings', 'owing' (instead of owning), 'pesronal', 'buils', 'convenitentt', 'exenses', and 'developmeny'. Furthermore, incorrect collocations and awkward phrasings like 'these type of neighbourhoods' appear. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey meaning despite the frequent spelling and mechanical slips, this merits a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses like 'Although personal property is convenientt,it can be pretty expensive.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments (e.g., 'Especially immigrants who left their country, allowing them to pursue better living conditions'). Run-on constructions and dangling modifiers also affect clarity, such as in the concluding sentences of body paragraphs. While communication is not entirely blocked, the accumulation of grammatical errors restricts the score to a Band 5.0, where attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty.
