IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In a few countries, buying a home is more important than renting for individuals. What is the reason for this? In this essay, I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.
Some people try to buy a home because they think that owning a home provides more benefits than renting. They think that it will give them peace of mind as the owner. According to some people that home will be their permanent property, and no one has the right to kick them out of that home. After them, their child or even grandchild would live in that home. I think that owning a home has no disadvantages; the only problem is budget. To buy a home, a large amount of money is required; some people are unable to save a large amount of money. For those kinds of people, many companies offer instalment plans, which help them to become owners of a home with less struggle and less effort.
On the other hand, some people rent a home, and the reason is that they don't have a sufficient amount of money to buy a home, so they prefer to rent a home over buying it. Some people want to spend a long period of time in other cities or countries, and then return to their hometown. So, those kinds of people prefer to rent a home rather than buy it. Some people are very poor and cannot afford to buy their own home, so there is no other option but to rent a home for them.
In my opinion, if a person doesn't have budget issues, recomend them to buy a home, because it will be an asset for them. Owning a home provides more benefits than renting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the two main parts of the prompt: why owning a home is important and whether this situation is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. The writer mentions reasons such as peace of mind, permanence, and financial constraints, but these points are not fully extended. Furthermore, the evaluation of whether the situation is positive or negative is underdeveloped; the student states 'I think that owning a home has no disadvantages' and briefly advises buying if there are no budget issues, which lacks the analytical depth expected at higher bands. The position is clear, but the overall task coverage places this response securely at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate different aspects of the prompt, such as the reasons for buying versus renting. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'Some people' and 'so those kinds of people'. Logical progression is sometimes hindered by simplistic transitions between ideas, such as moving abruptly from the benefits of ownership to budget issues within the same paragraph. Referencing is mostly clear, but the lack of varied cohesive devices restricts the score to Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to housing and finance. Words such as 'permanent property', 'instalment plans', and 'asset' demonstrate an appropriate vocabulary size for Band 6.0. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'recomend them to buy a home' and 'spend a long period of time in other cities'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision of less common lexical items required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure through clauses introduced by 'because', 'which', and 'although'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'According to some people that home will be', 'there is no other option but to rent a home for them', and the missing subject in 'recomend them to buy a home'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but errors in verb tense consistency and preposition usage occur throughout the text. These errors do not impede communication, fitting the Band 6.0 profile.
