IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. There are several reasons for this situation. In my opinion, owining a home can be a positive thing, although it also has some negative aspects.

There are many reason why people prefer to own a house. firstly, owining a home gives people a sense of security and stability. They do not worry about the landlorrd increasing the rent or asking them to leave.Secondly, a house can be a good long-term investment. its value may increase over time and people can leave it for their children in the future. for instance, many families believe that having their own house is an important part of a stable life.

Another reason is that people have move freedom when they own a home. They can decorate their house, change the rooms,or make other improvements without asking a landlord. In contrast, people who rent a house may have to follow the landlords rules. Therefore , owining a home can make people feel more independent.

However, buying a house can also create financial pressure. Houses are often expensive, and people may need to take a large loan from a bank . They also have to pay for repairs, maintenance and other costs. Renting can be more suitable for young people who move frequently for study or work.

In conclusion, people may prefer owining a home because it provides security, independences and can be a long term investment. Although buying a house can be expensive , I believe that home ownership can provide important benefits in the long-term.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important in some countries and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. The writer establishes a clear position in the introduction, stating that home ownership is primarily positive while acknowledging its negative aspects. Relevant ideas regarding security, long-term investment, freedom, and financial pressure are presented and supported with examples and explanations. The progression of ideas is logical and fits the requirements of an academic task 2 essay, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs with a distinct introduction, body paragraphs addressing reasons and contrasting views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Another reason', and 'However'. However, there are some mechanical spacing issues and minor punctuation faults throughout the text, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'countries, owning', 'situation.In'). While the logical progression is clear throughout, these mechanical cohesion flaws keep the score at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'long-term investment', 'financial pressure', and 'maintenance'. There are frequent spelling errors and typos stemming from spacing issues (e.g., 'owining', 'landlorrd', 'move freedom') as well as occasional word-form confusion ('independences'). However, these vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication. The lexical control aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, showing sufficient flexibility for the topic while containing noticeable mechanical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation inaccuracies, notably missing space after terminal punctuation and commas, as well as minor capitalization issues (e.g., 'firstly', 'its', 'for instance'). Despite these errors, the structures used do not impede communication, and the writer successfully conveys complex ideas regarding financial pressure and lifestyle choices. This performance corresponds to a Band 6.0.
