IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's rapidly evolving world, the topic of some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people has sparked considerable debate, with opinions divided on whether it is beneficial or harmful. While both choices hold valid points, I believe that owning a home is a positive development despite some challenges.

To begin with, one of the most convincing arguments in favor of owning a home is that it provides security and financial stability. This factor has far-reaching implications in the context of families and long-term planning. For example in countries like Pakistan and india, people feel that their own house gives them respect and they do not have to worry about rent increases or shifting every year. Moreover, it demonstrates how the benefits of this approach can significantly outweigh any potential drawbacks, as a house is considered a valuable investment for the future. Therefore, this strengthens the case for home ownership as a logical and forward-thinking stance.

Equally important is the fact that renting causes uncertainty and financial loss inn the long run, which further reinforces my belief that owning is better. This becomes even more relevant when considering landlords who can increase rent or ask tenants to leave at any time, where the practical advantages of ownership are evident. Over time, paying rent means giving money without gaining any asset, while owning a home builds wealth. As such, this perspective not only aligns with practical needs but also reflects sound judgment in addressing modern challenges of inflation.

In conclusion, although it is understandable that some may prefer renting due to flexibility, I firmly believe that owning a home is a positive situation. The reasons discussed above show that security, investment, and stability make this posittion reasonable. With clear advantages and measurable impact, this opinion stands as the most convincing one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons why home ownership is important and whether this trend is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The writer provides relevant ideas, such as financial security, protection against unpredictable rent increases, and cultural significance in regions like Pakistan and India. While some arguments could benefit from deeper elaboration rather than slightly repetitive phrasing in the body paragraphs, the main components of the task are adequately met, demonstrating a sound understanding of the requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with logical sequencing of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with clear introductions to main points in each body paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on abstract summary phrases like 'this strengthens the case' or 'this perspective not only aligns'. Despite these minor flaws, the progression of thought remains clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'financial stability', 'far-reaching implications', and 'forward-thinking stance'. There are, however, some inaccuracies and minor spelling errors, such as 'inn' instead of 'in' and 'posittion' instead of 'position'. Word choices are generally clear enough to ensure successful communication, though collocation is occasionally awkward, such as in the opening sentence phrasing 'some countries owning a home rather than renting one'. Overall, the vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively. There are several error-free sentences, particularly when expressing straightforward opinions. However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as in the overly convoluted opening sentence ('the topic of some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people has sparked considerable debate'). Punctuation and article use also contain occasional flaws. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from achieving a higher band in grammar.
