IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is believed that having a house for individuals in numbers of countries is most significant then renting a flat. I firmly believe that it is a negative condition to buy a flat or home instead of just renting it .
the most crucial reason is that many citizens does not have the capacity or not having enough assent to buy a house because it is expensive. for instance many people just relay on their payment from their offices which they usually receive at the start of the month and they hardly spent it on their physiological needs so it impossible for them to save such a huge amount of money that is why they just rented it and live peacefully.
the other essential reason is that instead of buying a house the individual can start their own business which will give them profit so they can afford to rent a house from this profit . for instance a person start a small business now he earn handsome amount ,he is know able to afford an apartment at any wonderful place rich with facilities on the other hand if they just buy the house they will not spend their life easily it become difficult for them to afford all the expenses , spending on business will also help them to make lifestyle improve.
in conclusion i say that i is a negative situation which has no positive impact so this type of rules wee not implemented at any place or country so their people got benefit.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt, discussing why homeownership might be valued and expressing a clear position that owning a home instead of renting is a negative situation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the writer mentions financial constraints and the opportunity to invest in a business, but these points are under-developed and lack fully elaborated supporting examples. Furthermore, the second half of the prompt is slightly misinterpreted, as the essay focuses on why buying is a negative financial burden rather than evaluating the societal mindset towards homeownership broadly. These limitations place the response comfortably within the Band 5 descriptor, where the task is addressed, but ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, paragraphing is not always applied correctly, as the text frequently misses capital letters at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'the most crucial reason...', 'in conclusion i say...'). Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'for instance' and 'on the other hand'. While there is a discernible overall structure guiding the reader from reasons to a conclusion, the lack of accurate punctuation, paragraph breaks, and varied logical transitions results in a mechanical flow. This level of organization and cohesion aligns with Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with frequent spelling, word choice, and collocation inaccuracies that restrict the range. Examples include 'most significant then renting' (instead of than), 'numbers of countries', 'enough assent' (presumably meaning assets), 'relay on' (rely on), and 'know able' (now able). While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'physiological needs' and 'handsome amount', misuse of terms prevents clear communication at times. The lexical control is generally characteristic of Band 5, showing a minimally adequate range for the task but featuring noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. The text contains numerous grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('many citizens does not have', 'a person start... he earn'), run-on sentences with comma splices ('now he earn handsome amount ,he is know able'), and a complete absence of proper capitalization and terminal punctuation in multiple sentences. Complex structures attempted are frequently faulty. These persistent errors across the text significantly impede readability, placing the performance at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the presence of some basic communicative structures.
