In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries renting a home is very important for people rather than owning a home, it may be positive or negative situation depending on the type of people. This essay will discuss both the positive and negative aspect of this situation.
For some people it is very important to buy a home for themselves rather than renting a home because in some countries like England, United Kingdom,Australia and many more have high prices for renting a home, so it will be a greater burden for the people to pay the rent at the end of week or month. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at only 156 words. Because the text is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence, the ideas and arguments are severely under-developed. Although the student attempts to address both the reasons for homeownership and whether it is a positive or negative situation, the abrupt ending prevents any full exploration of the prompt. Consequently, this falls under Band 4 due to the minimal development and incomplete nature of the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction and two body paragraphs, though the final paragraph is cut off. There are basic attempts at logical organization, such as 'For some people' and 'In contrast', which provide some structural framework. However, the progression is cut short by the incomplete text. Referencing is sometimes repetitive, and paragraphing is disrupted by the premature ending. Cohesion is functional at the sentence level but lacks overall development, aligning with a Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of vocabulary suitable for the task, such as 'renting a home', 'high prices', and 'developed countries'. There are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'not so much high', alongside spelling errors like 'Srilanka' and 'peiople'. The vocabulary is adequate to convey basic ideas about housing costs, but the repetition of phrases ('renting a home', 'owning a house') restricts the lexical range to a Band 5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'For some people it is very important to buy a home... because in some countries... have high prices'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as run-on sentences and missing subjects ('because the difference for pro...'). The control over complex structures is weak, and the incomplete final sentence demonstrates difficulties with grammar and sentence completion. This performance fits the Band 5 descriptor.
