IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often observed that it become essential for the dwellers in some countries to own their house instead of renting one. This essay will argue that the complex renting process explain this preference, an that governments should indeed make rules and the strict limitations to support residents with low budget.

The principal reason why it often becomes important for people to buy their own house is that renting a house rather feels equally or more overall expensive. This is because no strict boundaries for lease collection has been announced by the government. For example, in Surat city, people gather rent based on overall demand without any external restriction, as a result, the dwellers will choose to by their own property which makes them equally financial burdened.

Turning to the question of whether it is a positive or negative situation, I firmly believe it as a negative state. This is because the people with low financial strength will be forced to invest such huge money in terms of making their own home. For example, the person who is renting apartment might be from a lower class background who needs further period for building own house but these circumstances seize their opportunity. Consequently, it result into a big liability or loans to the individual.

In conclusion, the trend occurs chiefly because of less restriction on lease gathering. As for the issue, I am convinced that it is a negative scenario overall and government should support the poor residents by subsidies and strict rules for lease collection limits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining potential reasons for homeownership preferences and clearly stating a position on whether this is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, though some parts are slightly under-developed or general, such as the claim about lease collections and financial burdens. The position is maintained throughout the essay. While the arguments could be extended with more sophisticated examples, the task is sufficiently answered, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into four distinct paragraphs with a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, evaluation, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'This is because', 'For example', and 'In conclusion', though some referencing is a bit mechanical or faulty, like 'an that governments' and 'Consequently, it result into'. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately, guiding the reader through the points. Overall, this demonstrates a coherent arrangement that fits the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'financial burden', 'liability', and 'subsidies'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'it become essential' instead of 'becomes', 'lease collection' instead of 'rent control', 'choose to by' instead of 'buy', and 'invest such huge money'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms attempted in the essay. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout, including tense agreement issues ('it become essential'), article omissions or misuse ('the person who is renting apartment', 'a big liability'), and verb form mistakes ('it result into'). While the meaning remains mostly clear and communication is rarely impeded, the density of errors prevents the grammar score from reaching Band 6.0, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.
