IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
For many people around the world purchasing their own house holds a significant value instead of living in a rented apartment. This is because owing a home provide stability and can be a good future investment. However, I believe that it is a negative development as it can put a person into financial burden and may also create housing crisis.
One major reason for buying a house by individuals is to make their life relatively stable. As changing an apartments constantly can bring instability to people's lives, along with this managing the monthly rent can put extra pressure to them. Therefore, the majority of people prefer owning a property, which can provide a stable everyday life. For example, after buying a house, people can find deep connection with that place and community. Additionally, houses provide a secure investment for future because the value of property keeps on increasing with the passing years, and subsequently people can have great return when they sell their house in future.
On the other hand, the major drawback of purchasing a house is that it can put a person into financial discomfort. This is because buying a house requires a large investment and also have regular mortgage. As a result, this can put a person in financial stress. Furthermore, rising house demand can increase the artificial price hike because with increasing demand of houses there may not be sufficient supply of homes which can creat housing crisis leading to the high property cost. For instance, many cities around the world are facing the problem of property shortage due to rapid rise in the demand of property.
In conclusion, the search of stability and secure financial inverstment has influence people to own a house. In my opinion, this type of development can put a person in bad financial state and also create artificial housing crisis in many countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is valued—specifically citing stability and investment potential—and clearly stating a negative position regarding this trend due to financial burdens and potential housing crises. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported, such as when discussing how constant apartment moving causes instability or how high demand without adequate supply creates artificial price hikes. Although some arguments could be explored in greater depth to reach the highest bands, the task is fully covered with relevant, well-structured ideas. The response meets the requirements of Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with the introduction, followed by reasons for homeownership, the drawbacks in the third paragraph, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "This is because", "Therefore", "Additionally", and "On the other hand". However, some cohesive ties feel slightly mechanical, and there are occasional minor referencing issues, such as "purchasing a house requires a large investment and also have regular mortgage" where pronoun and agreement cohesion could be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's line of thought easily. This aligns closely with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors, comfortably sitting at a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less-common lexical items such as "significant value", "financial discomfort", "artificial price hike", and "property shortage". However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, the writer uses "owing a home provide stability" (grammatical slip combined with lexical choice), refers to "changing an apartments", and uses "inverstment" (a spelling error). Another example is "put a person into financial discomfort" rather than financial strain or difficulty. Despite these minor lapses which do not impede communication, the vocabulary is sufficiently flexible to convey the intended meaning, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well (e.g., "which can provide a stable everyday life" and "because with increasing demand of houses there may not be sufficient supply"). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing issues, such as "owing a home provide" (subject-verb agreement error), "buying a house... also have regular mortgage" (missing article and agreement error), and "has influence people" (incorrect participle form). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, they rarely impede overall communication. This performance reflects the criteria for Band 6.0.
