IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations it is considered essential to own a house rather than renting an accommodation. This is because people want financial stability and security of life. I believe this is a negative situation as it may causes housing crisis.

In most countries local people tend to gain homeownership merely as a belief that it will increase their generational wealth. The primary reason for that is buying own accommodation as early as possible secures life and encourage savings which helps to build wealth. Renting a home will result in loss of huge amount of money every month, which leads to financial crisis. As a consequence, people may face mental and emotional stress due to uncertainity in their lives. For instance, in Pakistan, it is considered a custom to buy own house as a symbol of wealth in the society.

On the other hand, I believe that this trend in many countries creates a negative situation because it leads to shortage of houses. This is due to the fact that if more residents gain houseownership then it leads to housing crisis, which may cause inflation in the country. Consequently, the prices of houses will rise significantly, which will make it difficult for next generation to afford. For example, as many students went to Canada to study and bought their own houses caused a major problem of housing crisis over there.

In conclusion, in many nations it is followed as a trend to buy own house in order to create a generational wealth; however, I believe that it is negative thinking because it can lead to housing crisis and inflation in a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why homeownership is important and presenting a clear position that this is a negative situation. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations and examples, such as the mention of cultural practices in Pakistan and student migration to Canada. However, the development of ideas tends to be slightly repetitive, and the connection between buying a house and causing a housing crisis could have been explored with more nuance. Overall, the prompt is adequately answered, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to Band 6.0 as some ideas are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is arranged coherently with clear overall progression, using standard introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'The primary reason for that' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in repetitive sentence starters like 'This is because' and 'This is due to the fact that'. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the logical flow between sentences could be smoother. These features align comfortably with Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'generational wealth', 'homeownership', and 'financial stability'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'renting an accommodation' (accommodation is uncountable), 'gain homeownership' (achieve or attain is more natural), and 'uncertainity' (spelling error). While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'it may causes housing crisis', article errors like 'buying own accommodation', and preposition misuse. Although these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the core message, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching Band 6.5. Control of grammar is indicative of a Band 6.0.
