IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many individuals prefer to own a house instead of spending money on rental accommodations this is considered much more important. There as several reasons for this preference, and I believe that although home ownership has some drawbacks, it is generally a positive approach.
One major reason why people prefer to own a house is financial security .property is often viewed as a long-term investment because its value may increase over time. instead of paying rental amount every month without gaining ownership, people can build an asset that may benefit them in future. Moreover, owning a house can provide sense of stability, particularly for families with children as they do not have to worry about rental payment and no fear of leaving house in case of non payment. In addition, in some countries owning a property is associated with social symbol and personal achievement.
There are ,however, some disadvantages to this situation. Buying a house usually requires a substantial amount of money, and many people have to take bank loan which can becomes financial burden. As a result people may spend a large amount of their income on paying loans and have less money for other needs. furthermore people who prioritise owning home may delay other important goals, such as travelling, education and starting a business.
In conclusion, I believe that owing a home is a positive preference, provided tat people can afford it easily without putting them under excessive financial pressure. A home can offer stability, security and financial value, but renting can be a more practical option for people who can not afford to buy a property.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring the reasons why home ownership is important and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided in the second paragraph, such as financial security and social status, are well-explained and extended. The counterarguments regarding debt and delayed goals in the third paragraph further substantiate the discussion. Although some ideas could have been developed with a bit more depth, all parts of the task are appropriately covered. This performance fits comfortably into Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to reasons for home ownership, counter-arguments, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some minor mechanical issues and punctuation lapses, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and a run-on sentence in the opening paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless. This aligns well with the Band 6.5 or 7 descriptors, leaning toward a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'financial security', 'long-term investment', and 'personal achievement' show a good grasp of topic-specific language. However, there are some word-choice and collocation issues, such as 'rental amount' instead of 'rent' or 'rental payments', and spelling/typographical errors like 'tat' instead of 'that' and missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'furthermore'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including run-on sentences in the introduction ('...rental accommodations this is considered...'), missing articles ('provide sense of stability'), subject-verb agreement errors ('which can becomes'), and punctuation mistakes. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The control of grammar is characteristic of Band 6.0.
