IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some nations, people owning a property is believed to be more essential than renting one for living. I think long-term stability and financial security are the main reasons for people to have their own houses, and in my opinion, a private house plays a positive role in people's lives as well as benefits the country as a whole.

It is a widely known fact that social status demands individuals to own a house. This encourages people to save money and helps to build a permanent base in a community. Families do not need to change their rented apartment very often due to unavoidable circumstances such as the owner moving in, selling the property or renovations. Changing belongings from one house to another feels very hectic for people. For instance, a person who receives a notice of one month to move out of a rented place can become homeless if he or she cannot find the new place to live within that period.

From what I believe, having one's own house makes people feel stable and secure. It provides owners with the freedom to customise their houses in whatever way they want. Owning the house has not only improved the standard of living but has also helped in personal growth in terms of mental health and peace because owners never have to worry about lease non-renewals or unexpected move-outs. Homeowners feel a sense of belonging to the neighbourhood as they tend to stay longer than renters. For instance, more than 90% of people in Turkey own their own houses and this has contributed significantly to their economy.

To conclude, having one's own home is very important for some nations to elevate the quality of life and to have a growing economy. This idea has represented many positive developments including financial stability and long-term security for the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain why homeownership is valued—citing long-term stability, financial security, and freedom from unexpected move-outs—and you take a clear position that this is a positive situation. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning the difficulties of moving rented apartments and referencing a statistic regarding Turkey. While the example about Turkey is general, it adequately supports the argument. Overall, your ideas are well-developed and directly answer both the 'why' and 'positive/negative' components of the task, earning a strong band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that outlines your position, followed by body paragraphs exploring social status, stability, and economic benefits, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'From what I believe,' and 'To conclude' are used appropriately to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is handled logically and sufficiently. However, a few transitions feel slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the structure is very coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'long-term stability,' 'financial security,' 'standard of living,' and 'sense of belonging' show a good command of topic-related terminology. You also attempt less common items like 'unavoidable circumstances' and 'lease non-renewals.' There are occasional awkward collocations or phrasing, such as 'people owning a property is believed to be more essential than renting one for living,' but these do not impede communication. Spelling and word choice remain generally accurate throughout the essay, supporting a solid band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures. You demonstrate good control of grammar overall, with frequent error-free sentences. For example, sentences like 'Families do not need to change their rented apartment very often due to unavoidable circumstances...' are grammatically sound and well-constructed. There are a few minor slips or slightly unnatural structures, such as 'Owning the house has not only improved...', but these errors are infrequent and do not disrupt the flow of communication or strain the reader.
