IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries residents think that owning a house is very key comapres to renting one.

There are possible several reasons why people think that. Firstly, it gives flexibity to the family better than renting a apartment. For example, people who rent a house might stuck at financial crisis at one time. Additionally, it gives a person more options to choose to spend not to worry about the high renting demand in every month. Thinking about longer time family planning, it provides with shelter and deeper protechtion. On the contrary, renting it for a huge price and paying it every month might give someone a heart attack for a low earning community. Moreover, if the main person who leads the family fall sick, might that effects come to the whole initiatives.

It is a very good positive aspects of people that how quickly they adapt to an important matter, since people nowadays choose loonger solution not the short one. Furthermore, people cares about health care, family planning, safe stay with less renting pressure assure it as their finest choice. Although, a person might needs to pay monthly bills like electronics, gas and water but not as it for renting. Also, a person can manage cost for other stuff like traveling, family planning, money sending.

In conclution, people are today searching for to live with a happy family without woorying about cost and shifting to a new place, decide to own a new apartment. Additionally, I do think it brings a positive solution for better and flexible way of spending moments with loved ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is valued and offering an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks precision. For example, the reasons provided for why people prefer owning over renting, such as financial flexibility or dealing with a crisis, are stated rather vaguely. Phrases like 'might stuck at financial crisis' are unclear and lack sufficient elaboration. Similarly, the stance that the situation is positive is supported by general assertions rather than well-extended arguments. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the lack of fully developed ideas places this response firmly at Band 5.5, bordering on Band 6 for addressing the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing a clear attempt at a conventional structure. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections. For instance, the transition 'On the contrary, renting it for a huge price...' is used incorrectly to introduce further supporting points rather than a contrast. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or overused, such as the repetitive use of 'Additionally' and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the exact flow of thought between sentences. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better control, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 5.0 response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding. Words are frequently misused or incorrectly combined, such as 'very key comapres', 'might stuck at financial crisis', and 'safe stay with less renting pressure'. Spelling mistakes are also present, including 'comapres', 'flexibity', 'protechtion', 'loonger', 'cures', 'in conclution', and 'woorying'. Although the writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to housing and finance, the frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling place this performance at a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, these are frequently faulty and grammatically incomplete, such as 'Moreover, if the main person who leads the family fall sick, might that effects come to the whole initiatives.' Subject-verb agreement errors, missing prepositions, and incorrect verb tenses appear throughout the text (e.g., 'a person might needs', 'people cares'). Frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, aligning with the descriptor for Band 5.0 where attempts at complex sentences are often flawed.
