IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In most of the countries people prefer to stay in their own house instead of rented places.
This might be the case because when people stay in their own homes they get a sense of security like nowhere and the freedom to enjoy it which is not possible in case of a rented house. As there will be many restrictions in case of rented places such as the owner might be grumphy, setting a lot of rules and restrictions e.t.c.
But in case of their own homes people are free to do whever they wanted without worrying about anybody and can decorate or utilize the house however they want. Not only security but it also builds a form a prestige or status in their social circle and among relatives. As the society sees people with their own house way differently from those without a house.
For an example a family went for a tour and enjoyed a lost outside but when they return to their own little house that comfort, that belonging is nowhere near comparable to those staying in a luxurious suites in a hotel.
But it also feels like a burden when people in their hope of having their own house take loans from banks or any financial instituitions, and having to repay them is nowhere anything good to speak of. But most of the people now-a-days are doing exactly that, it's one thing if they have financial capacity to repay that but if if not then its feels like a never ending process.
There are many more such cases that can be said but it varies indiviaual to individual basis. So coming to a concusion whether its positive or negative is never dependent on a single case.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. The writer outlines reasons such as security, freedom, and social prestige, and discusses the negative aspects of financial burdens like bank loans. However, the ideas are relatively undeveloped and rely heavily on generalisations rather than fully extended arguments. For instance, the example provided about a family returning from a tour is somewhat anecdotal and lacks clear analytical depth. The position is somewhat implicit until the final paragraph where the writer concludes that it varies from individual to individual. Because all parts of the prompt are addressed, albeit superficially in places, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0, settling securely at Band 5.5 due to limited idea extension.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall arrangement with clear attempts to separate ideas into paragraphs. However, paragraphing is somewhat irregular, with very short single-sentence paragraphs like the opening statement. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or basic, such as starting multiple sentences and paragraphs with 'But' or 'In case of'. Referencing is at times unclear, for example, the pronoun use in 'enjoyed a lost outside'. There is a lack of smooth progression between ideas, and the concluding paragraph feels abrupt rather than serving as a natural culmination of a well-structured argument. Overall, the organizational features are sometimes faulty and mechanical, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic meaning, but it is limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple words and phrases like 'own house', 'rented place', and 'good to speak of'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'grumphy' (grumpy), 'whever they wanted' (whenever they wanted), 'enjoyed a lost outside', and 'coming to a concusion'. Furthermore, spelling errors like 'indiviaual' and 'concusion' appear. While the range is sufficient to communicate the main points, the frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling place this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are numerous grammatical errors, missing commas, and run-on sentences that require the reader to re-read passages to grasp the meaning. Examples include 'As there will be many restrictions in case of rented places such as the owner might be grumphy, setting a lot of rules and restrictions e.t.c.' and 'if if not then its feels like a never ending process.' Subject-verb agreement and prepositional use are also problematic in several places. Because attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and errors cause some difficulty for the reader, a Band 5 score is appropriate.
