IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries it is prefered to own a home rather than living in a rented place. many countries with rising inflation rates, it has become very costly to live on rent. I believe this is the result of poor economy. in this essay i will be explaining on why owning a house might be a better financial decision for most population.

Owning a home means a person has a permenant posession to that real-esate, untill they make a decision to sell it. people prefer to own a home because it comes with various benefis for example, you can pay for your home on a payment plan according to your financial affordiblity and with every next payment you are closer to owning a home. Moreover, making rental payments meaning you have no authoritiy over that place and rent prices tends to increase each year along with inflation. Also many people are not capable of renting an entire house which can accomodate an entire family instead they would have to live in a much smaller place such as an appartment.

Majority of the people buy a home for investment purposes. they can invest their capital in an asset which will bring them benifits over long term, for example a cost of a house will gradually increase over the years. Furthermore, you can later on generate a rental income from owning a house too incase you are no longer able to live there.

I believe it is a more financially responsible decision. if people are inclining towards buying a home rather than renting it. owning a home will have a positive impact on your life rather than renting a place and getting pay checks every month.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why owning a home is important and whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position, stating that owning a home is a more financially responsible decision due to rising rent and inflation, and views this as a positive situation. However, the ideas are somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding financial benefits and investment, and lack full extension. For instance, the point about mortgage payment plans is introduced but not deeply explored. The response meets the minimum word count requirement. This performance aligns best with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to use paragraphing to separate different ideas, such as reasons for owning a home versus investment purposes. However, progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Also', and 'Moreover'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the final paragraph where pronouns and clause structures create confusion. Paragraphing could be managed more effectively to separate the two main prompts distinctly. Overall, this demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6 cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting less common items such as 'inflation rates', 'permenant posession', and 'financial affordiblity'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('prefered', 'permenant', 'posession', 'untill', 'benefis', 'affordiblity', 'authoritiy', 'appartment', 'benifits', 'incase') and occasional word-choice issues ('meaning you have no authoritiy' instead of 'means'). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but errors prevent it from reaching a higher band. This fits comfortably at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses. However, punctuation and capitalization are weak throughout the text, with many sentences starting without capital letters ('many countries with rising inflation...', 'in this essay i will...'). There are also grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'making rental payments meaning you have no authoritiy' and a sentence fragment in the final paragraph ('if people are inclining towards buying a home rather than renting it. owning a home will...'). These errors cause some disruption, placing this at Band 5.0.
