IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In said that in some countries people prefer owning home rather than renting one is very important people, it depends on every individual where they feel more comfortable some people believe renting house is more expensive so thay prefer owning a house .There some positive and negative effects we are going to discuss.

On one hand renting house in some countries is difficult becouse the rent is too high for some people it is not afforadable. For instance in pakistan its very expensive they have to pay one month advance rent. They have to pay electricity bills, water bill and gas bill paying all these bills with the one job and then paying rent is too difficult for an individual.

However In other hand if the family is owning a house is in more ease rather then the renting house .For example in england most of the people live in there own houses so they don't have to be worried about the every month rent they just need to pay the essiental bills .They can decorate there homes according to their choise .They have a freedom of choise they can update and re design thier house as they wanted they don't need anyone's permission to do that .

Therfore owning a house is far better then renting a house .It make you feel more secure and comfortable and feel free to do anything however in rent house you have to ask for any updation and every month have to pay rent on time even if you don't have some time because of finacional issues .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the two-part prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The student attempts to explain reasons such as financial burden and freedom of choice. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on Pakistan and England offers basic examples, but these are not fully extended with sophisticated reasoning. There is a clear position presented throughout the text. Overall, the task is addressed to a Band 5.5 standard, as the ideas are relevant but under-developed and lack the depth expected for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, showing an attempt at a logical structure with transitional phrases like 'On one hand' and 'However In other hand'. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by poor punctuation and run-on sentences. For example, sentences often lack proper periods, causing multiple ideas to merge incorrectly. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or mechanically, and referencing pronouns like 'they' can occasionally become unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of sentences requires significant improvement. This places the response firmly at a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with words like 'house', 'renting', and 'expensive' recurring frequently throughout the essay. There are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'becouse', 'afforadable', 'pakistan', 'essiental', 'choise', 'thier', 'Therfore', 'updation', and 'finacional'. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts a few less common items like 'financial issues', but the high frequency of spelling and word-choice mistakes restricts the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The student relies heavily on simple sentences and struggles with complex structures, which are often faulty. Punctuation is a major weakness, with a complete absence of proper sentence separation in many places, resulting in run-on sentences like 'For instance in pakistan its very expensive they have to pay one month advance rent.' Subject-verb agreement and article usage also show frequent errors. Because the frequency of grammatical and punctuation errors causes regular difficulty for the reader and obscures the structure of the sentences, the performance aligns with a Band 4.5, represented as a 4.5.
