IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a few countries being a owner of personal home is more necessary for individuals rather than renting one. This is because personal house is considered amongst the basic necessaties in those countries. I belive it is negative development as property nowadays is very expensive.

One major reason is that people don't feel safe or comfortable in a rented houses in many countries. A personal property is considered basic need for living. In many countries like Pakistan or India the owners of rented houses scare the families. In these countries the rent of the house is increased annually or even bu annually which discourage people in living there. People think that they are always dependent on many things like if they like to paint a room so don't have right to do without the owner's permission.

In my opinion, this is a negative development because nowadays prices of properties are very high. Buying a own house need a huge savings which are eventually spent at a static resource meaning it doesn't return any price. On the other hand, this amount can be spent in some buiseness which results in profit. For example, In Pakistan most of the retired people buy a house from their pension or funds and even they don't have any savings left for their medical care.

In conlusion, there are many reasons that people prefer to own a house but i believe it has many drawbacks. People should consider investing in some startups or buiseness rather than investing in a non profitable thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining why home ownership is important and presenting a clear position that it is a negative development. The writer introduces relevant reasons, such as cultural perceptions of security and the financial drawbacks of tying up capital in static assets, citing examples like Pakistan. However, some ideas are somewhat under-developed or briefly stated, particularly the discussion on financial returns versus business investments. The position is maintained throughout the essay, but the arguments could be extended further to achieve a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the Band 6 profile well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as psychological safety versus financial implications. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen with transitions like 'In a few countries' and 'In conlusion' (which contains a typo). Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to limited cohesive ties between clauses. Progression is present, yet the links between sentences can be repetitive, placing this section comfortably at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'static resource', 'pension or funds', and 'non profitable thing'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'necessaties', 'belive', 'a owner', 'bu annually', and 'conlusion'. Grammatical phrasing around vocabulary, such as 'Buying a own house need a huge savings', also shows limitations in collocation and precision. Communication is not impeded, but the errors limit the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'People think that they are always dependent on many things like if they like to paint a room so don't have right to do without the owner's permission.' There are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('being a owner', 'is considered basic need'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Buying a own house need'), and run-on structures. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from reaching Band 6.
