IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries around the globe, possessing a home ownership is considered more important as compared to rent an accomodation. There are several reasons behind this phenomenon like increasing interest in investing in real estate, sense of belonging, higher rent prices, leading to a culture of acquiring a property rather than being a tenant.I strongly think this a postive trend since it aids to economy growth.

To begin with, owning a property somewhere brings an individual satisfaction. Residing in one's own place without any further obligations or restrictions is often preferrable. When people are renting a house they have to follow the certain contract rules that they are bound to follow, which often push tenants to adapt accordingly leading to the changes in their own routines. Moreover, modern sedantry lifestyles are already very depressing to adjust to other life situations, pressing people to find their own property.Furthermore, exorbitant rent price is other major driver of pushing citizens towards buying their own.

I firmly hold this view that buying a property is far more better than renting.First and foremost, this trend helps in aiding economy growth through the hard cash investment. In addition, to acquire a property often demand certain amount of effort through hard work and efficient savings. Residents often become more regular and responsible resulting in strong and ethical workforce often setting example for the youth, how to acheive their goals.Ultimately more focussed people would spare less on fashion, clothing and eating out, ultimately promoting mature citizentry.

In conclusion, this trend has primarily came out from having the possession of ownness and finding peace of mind rather than being in someone else's.Having its capacity to aid any economy's progress and keeping capital in home country rather than investing overseas makes this trend more beneficial for any nation as well as its citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and discussing whether this trend is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position throughout, suggesting that the trend is positive because it aids economic growth. Ideas are generally relevant, covering factors such as emotional satisfaction, avoiding strict rental contracts, and the motivation for hard work. However, some arguments, such as the mention of 'modern sedentary lifestyles', are slightly undeveloped or tangential to the core question. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing reasons and personal views, followed by a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition between sentences is occasionally abrupt, and spacing errors (e.g., missing spaces after punctuation marks) detract from the overall flow. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including phrases like 'real estate', 'exorbitant rent price', and 'hard cash investment'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'possessing a home ownership', 'rent an accomodation', and 'aiding economy growth' (instead of economic growth). There are also spelling errors ('sedantry' instead of sedentary, 'acheive' instead of achieve, 'citizentry' instead of citizenry). These lexical inaccuracies and mechanical errors place the writing firmly in the Band 5.5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'leading to a culture of acquiring a property'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the response, including missing articles ('rent an accomodation', 'is other major driver'), incorrect verb forms ('than rent an accomodation'), and punctuation errors. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are pervasive enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 6.0.
