IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. There are multiple reasons people prefer owning a home rather than renting specaily in Asian countries due to some circumstances.
There are some positive situations and few are negative situations of owning a home. I believe that owning a home is a positive situation because of we can decorate it on our way. We can grow plants in any part of our house as well as we can not pay any rent at the end of the month.
In addition to it we feel comfortable whenever we can comeback or go out. It is just because we are the owners of the house and there is no one to interfair in our works. Most importantly privacy.
Beside this we have some negative situation of owning a home for example It is too expensive to purchas a house for ordinary people at this age. There are a lot of government texes and having good location and most importantly to face the defficulties. Specially in the present we are facing poverty and inflation.
On the otherhand, Renting a house has some positive situations like its less expensive and everyone can afford it and change it when ever you want according to our desires but there are some negative situations we have to face of we reant a house like now a days circumstances like inflation, poverty and high expences it very difficult to survive in ahouse which is on rent. Today rents are too high and we can not do any thing in it according to our desire like not to paint or decurate rent house and many more things.
In conclusion, I believe renting a house or owning a house both have some positive and negative situations. So we can face it and bear it according to our desires and needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why homeownership is valued and presenting views on whether this is a positive or negative situation. The writer adopts a clear position, stating that owning a home is generally positive while acknowledging both sides of the issue. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack full extension or support. For instance, points regarding privacy and customisation are mentioned briefly without detailed elaboration. Furthermore, the discussion of the negative aspects of homeownership and the comparison with renting are somewhat repetitive and underdeveloped, focusing heavily on surface-level points like inflation and expenses. While the prompt is adequately covered, the lack of deeper elaboration and the somewhat repetitive arguments place this response firmly in the Band 5 to Band 6 range. It addresses the task, but ideas remain limited and partially developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, attempting to structure the introduction, positive aspects of owning, negative aspects of owning, renting perspectives, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by abrupt transitions and disjointed sentences. For example, phrases like "In addition to it we feel comfortable whenever we can comeback or go out" and "Beside this we have some negative situation" show mechanical and sometimes inaccurate use of cohesive devices. Paragraphing is attempted, but paragraphs tend to group contrasting ideas loosely together, such as mixing personal reflections with broader economic challenges. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow lacks the clear logical organisation required for a higher band. Cohesion within paragraphs is faulty, resulting in a somewhat fragmented reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on general terms such as 'situations', 'things', and 'good'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'specaily' instead of 'especially', 'interfair' instead of 'interfere', 'purchas' instead of 'purchase', 'texes' instead of 'taxes', 'defficulties' instead of 'difficulties', 'reant' instead of 'rent', and 'decurate' instead of 'decorate'. These errors indicate a limited lexical range and insufficient control over word formation and spelling. While the meaning can generally be understood despite the inaccuracies, the vocabulary is minimally adequate at best, restricting the score to a Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. Frequent errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('renting a house or owning a house both have'), preposition errors ('in a house which is on rent' instead of 'for rent'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas following introductory phrases. For instance, sentences like 'There are some positive situations and few are negative situations of owning a home' and 'On the otherhand, Renting a house has some positive situations like its less expensive...' demonstrate frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader and obscure complex structures. The majority of sentences contain grammatical inaccuracies.
