IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries, there is ongoing debate about having own home is a positive or negative situation rather then ranting home. Well, from my prespective having own home is a positive situation we discuss all the key points in this conversation.

To begin with, lot of people having dream to buy their own home however, it is not the easy task to buy your own home. Everyone wants peace in their life many individuals are put their whole life effort to build their own home while if you have your own home you have a lot of advantages. For example, the first point is you do not want to pay any type of rent for this house, the other is if you have any free room you can easily rent it, or you do not have worry about shifting your home again and again.

On the other hand, if we overweighs the renting home with owning home renting home has separate criteria. Likewise, if there is two person one is person A and one is person B. Person A have their own home but he never have capital for business he spend all his money for buying home rather then person B who never have their own home he is living on rented home whereas he have a lot of money for business and with time he should able to buy his own home with this example we came to know that renting a home also have benefits.

In conclusion, In my opinion, having your own home is positive situation because its securing your future if we have our own home our children's future are also secured but if someone living on rent so he must try to buy his own home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is valued and offering an opinion on whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position throughout, suggesting that homeownership is primarily positive because it secures the future, while briefly acknowledging the counterargument regarding capital tied up in property versus business investments through the hypothetical example of person A and person B. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed and lack extension. The reasoning remains quite basic and generalized, and the conversational tone ('we discuss all the key points in this conversation') affects the appropriate academic register required for Task 2. Consequently, the performance aligns best with Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization with recognizable introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs, though the transition sentences feel mechanical or informal ('Well, from my prespective... we discuss all the key points'). Logical progression is somewhat hindered by abrupt shifts in thought and rudimentary linking devices, such as repeating 'the other is' or using overly conversational phrases like 'with this example we came to know'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks sophistication. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the lengthy and repetitive conditional-style contrast paragraph involving person A and person B. These features reflect the characteristics of Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on fundamental terms such as 'home', 'house', 'money', and 'business'. There are frequent word choice and collocation inaccuracies, including 'ranting home' instead of renting, 'prespective' instead of perspective, 'capital for business' instead of capital for business investment, and 'living on rented home'. The range is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic points about renting versus owning. Spelling errors like 'prespective' and 'overweighs' further restrict the score. The lexical adequacy and frequency of errors place this response solidly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('lot of people having dream'), incorrect verb forms ('many individuals are put their whole life effort'), and awkward run-on sentences joined by commas instead of proper conjunctions or full stops (e.g., 'Person A have their own home but he never have capital for business he spend all his money...'). Agreement errors, such as 'person A have' and 'children's future are', are common. Because complex structures are frequently faulty and errors cause some difficulty and strain for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
