IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries, there is ongoing debate about having your own home is a positive or negative situation rather than renting home. Well, my prespective having your own home is a positive situation, we discuss all the key points in this conversation.
To begin with, a lot of people have the goal to buy their own home. However, it is not an easy task to buy your own home. Everyone wants peace in their life, many individuals put their whole life effort to build their own home while if you have your own home you have a lot of advantages. For example, the first point is you do not need to pay any type of rent for this house, the other is if you have any free room you can easily rent it and you do not have to worry about shifting your home again and again.
On the other hand, if we overweigh the renting home with owning home. Renting home has separate criteria. Likewise, if there are two people, one is person A and one is person B. Person A has their own home but he never has capital for business he spends all his money for buying home rather than person B who never have his own home he is living on rented home whereas he have a lot of money for business and with time he should be able to buy his own home with this example we came to know that renting a home also have benefits.
In conclusion, in my opinion, having your own home is a positive situation because it securing your future if we have our own home our children future are also secured but if someone is living on rent he must try to buy his own home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing why homeownership is valued and presenting an opinion on whether this is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. The introduction is conversational and repetitive, stating, "In some countries, there is ongoing debate about having your own home is a positive or negative situation rather than renting home." The reasons provided for homeownership are basic, focusing primarily on saving rent and the ability to rent out a spare room. The counter-argument involving person A and person B is somewhat convoluted and lacks clear academic structure. Although a clear position is maintained throughout, the ideas remain underdeveloped, corresponding to a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates some organizational structure with paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the overall progression is disjointed. Transitions between sentences and ideas are often awkward or mechanical, such as the sudden shift in the second body paragraph beginning with, "On the other hand, if we overweigh the renting home with owning home." Furthermore, referencing is unclear at times, and cohesive devices are overused or misused, such as repetitive phrasing like "buy your own home" and conversational filler like "Well, my prespective having your own home is a positive situation, we discuss all the key points in this conversation." This fits the Band 5 descriptor for faulty cohesion and lack of clear progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive vocabulary throughout the response. Phrases such as "buy your own home" and "living on rented home" are repeated multiple times. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including "prespective" instead of perspective, and awkward collocations like "overweigh the renting home with owning home." The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic meaning, but the frequent lexical errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly coordinated, and attempts at complex structures often result in run-on sentences and heavy punctuation errors, such as, "Everyone wants peace in their life, many individuals put their whole life effort to build their own home while if you have your own home you have a lot of advantages." Frequent grammatical errors, missing prepositions, and tense inconsistencies cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, placing the writing firmly in the Band 5 category.
