IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Owning a home can be considered as a lifelong wish of every common man. A home protects and nurtures an entire family. The point of view about raising a family changes across different demographics, history and cultures . Hence, the importance of owning a home rather then renting , varies across different countries. With all these factors, it is hard to decide that whether it's a positive or a negative case.
The dawn of agriculture in mankind's history paved the pathway for inheritence of land and other resources among a family , since then mankind was bound to settle at a particular place, rather then roaming around like nomads unlike the stone age. All these factors led to the concept of owning a home , where according to the mentality of a common human his/her family could live peacefully without any danger.
Historically, the countries where the climatic conditions made agriculture to flourish more and more people started getting settled in villages , hence more and more people started owning homes. it is a common human nature that we tend to do things that most of the people around us are doing. Therefore , as culture and society evolved in these agriculturally sufficed countries, owning a home became an unwritten societal norm, which people kept following for generations. Hence , in these kinds of countries/societies owning a home became a priority for a common man.
However, the countries where the climatic conditions did not let agriculture flourish and, hunting and gathering remained the primary source of food for humans. This pattern of hunting and gathering would change across seasons and hence people were forced to migrate from place to place , searching for food and shelter , hence most of the people never owned a home throughtout their lifetime. Similarly, when culture and society evolved in these countries, owning a home was never a priority, becuase evolution wise, it was always difficult to own a home .
In conclusion to this, importance of owning a home in a particular country depends on the primal and evolutionary instinct of the people across the demographical history . In countries like India, Japan owning a home rather than renting is a priority while in Scandinivian countries , owning a home over renting one is not a priority, all becuase of evolutionary history.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the task, explaining why homeownership is important and discussing whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer attempts to explore historical and evolutionary reasons for cultural differences in homeownership, such as the dawn of agriculture versus nomadic hunting and gathering. However, the position on whether this is a positive or negative situation is largely underdeveloped and obscured. Instead of taking a clear stance, the conclusion merely reiterates that homeownership depends on evolutionary history without actually evaluating the desirability of this phenomenon. Consequently, the ideas regarding the evaluative part of the prompt remain partially addressed, which aligns the response with a Band 6.0 level of task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct historical arguments. However, cohesion at the sentence level is frequently faulty and mechanical. There are noticeable punctuation and spacing errors around commas and periods (e.g., "cultures . Hence", "renting ,", "family ,") that disrupt the flow. Furthermore, referencing and transitional phrases are sometimes awkward, such as starting multiple paragraphs with "Hence" or "Historically". Logical progression is present, but the mechanical nature of cohesive devices and punctuation errors places this criterion firmly at a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "demographics", "nomads", "societal norm", and "evolutionary instinct". However, there are frequent word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as "then" instead of "than" in "rather then renting", "inheritence" instead of "inheritance", "sufficed" instead of "sufficient", "throughtout" instead of "throughout", and "becuase" instead of "because". These lexical errors and awkward collocations indicate a Band 6.0 level, as the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning but lacks the precision and control required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors with prepositions, articles, and clause structures, such as "decide that whether it's" and running sentences together without proper coordination. Punctuation control is weak, with persistent spacing errors before commas and periods throughout the essay. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from achieving a Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 the most accurate descriptor for grammatical range and accuracy.
