IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's mordern era, people in some countries prefer owning a home rather than renting one, and I strongly believe that owning a home is much more convinient and profitable.

During the earlier days, most people believed in living a simple life and thus the ones earning enough for a family but not for a home preffered a rented one. The well to do residents who owned two or three houses, to get a side income rented them out at decent rates, because of which people could have a decent place to live and for them a source of extra income. Furthermore, the laws and rules were not very strict back then and no one had a greedy mindset.

Comparing this to recent times, a lot of things have changed, from judicial laws to landlord rules. People struggle a lot to rental home, as the contracts and terms of the landlord are very severe and usually favours the owner. Therefore, instead of entering a contract with endlesses clauses and loopholes residents now prefer owning a home.

This is a positive situation in terms of everyone having their own place without the fear of termination. They get the choice to design the place according to their taste and style providing the desired comfort and warmth. With easy loan facilities and numerous customisable emi options, one could imagine the dream turn into a reality and acquire their freedom.

This on other hand can be a negative situation for the environment, with the increasing population and everyone demanding their own home can lead to deforestation and exploitaion of environmental resources. Thus, it is essential to realise that freedom always comes at a cost, and the one we are paying now can pave way for a darker future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, explaining why homeownership is important and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The historical context and current contrast are presented, and both the benefits of security and the environmental drawbacks are explored. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the discussion of past rental conditions is a bit unfocused, and the environmental consequence is introduced rather abruptly at the end. Despite these minor limitations in full extension, the main requirements of the task are adequately met, aligning well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing to separate historical background, current reasons, positive impacts, and negative impacts. Paragraphs are generally structured around central themes. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as starting paragraphs with phrases like 'Comparing this to recent times' or 'This on other hand'. Referencing is occasionally ambiguous, as with the pronoun 'This' referring back to broad concepts across sentences. While the logical progression is evident, these minor lapses in cohesion keep the response at a Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'customisable emi options', 'exploitation of environmental resources', and 'termination'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('mordern', 'convinient', 'preffered', 'endlesses') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'struggle a lot to rental home' instead of 'struggle a lot to rent homes'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands, making Band 6.0 an appropriate evaluation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like structures successfully in sentences like 'Instead of entering a contract with endlesses clauses and loopholes residents now prefer owning a home.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement slips ('everyone demanding... can lead') and missing prepositions or articles ('the well to do residents'). While these errors cause occasional distraction, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
