IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Everyone in human existence has a different way of thinking and has a different mindset than other people, I personally do believe that owning a home is vital and its is positive situation.
To commence with, there are several positive way or advantages which overweight its negative way or disadvantages like owning your home gives stability in which owner does not have to worry about rent increase or fear of getting removed, it also gives social status, safety net and it also help in welth building. For example, the house/homes continuous to be appreciating rather than depreciating which will continu in upcoming year like if you bought a flat which is 3 bhk in India in 2010 its cost was 20 lakhs now its price is 75 lakhs in 2026, these all are positive way or side of owning a home rather than renting it.
Further more, as a coin have dual side there is also a negative side of owning a home as compared renting one, like it requires a large proportion of capital capital or have to take loans which can put high pressure or burden on the person who is earning and if you can't pay it, which can also lead to debts,
but
But if your monthly salary is enough than
It will easy for you. For example, in
recent survey financial analysis have
given advice to how easily it can be
owned they said you should not have
any other debt and they said you have
to choose the b home which have
a monthly EMI that is 30% of monthy income.
In recapitulation, there are more positive side
of owning a house if you can balance
the EMI of the loan and it also encourage
people towards saving for home
which can be usefull in various aspects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why owning a home is important and stating a clear position that it is a positive situation. The main body paragraphs discuss reasons such as stability, social status, and wealth building, while also acknowledging the counter-argument regarding financial burdens and loans. However, the development of ideas tends to be slightly repetitive and relies heavily on generalisations rather than fully extended analysis. For example, the financial example provided about the Indian real estate market helps illustrate wealth building, but the counter-argument regarding EMIs is somewhat brief and fragmented. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise ideas using transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Further more'. However, paragraphing and sentence construction suffer from significant mechanical issues. The text breaks abruptly across lines, and punctuation is occasionally faulty, such as the dangling conjunction 'but' on a separate line. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or overused, and referencing is not always clear, which disrupts the logical flow of the argument. While the progression of ideas is discernible, the structural lapses prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. These issues align with a Band 5.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'stability', 'appreciating', 'depreciating', and 'financial analysis'. However, there are notable lexical errors, spelling mistakes, and inappropriate word choices throughout the text, such as 'welth building', 'continuous to be appreciating' instead of 'continue to appreciate', and 'capital capital'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the student's message, corresponding to a Band 5.5 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the grammatical accuracy is weak. There are numerous run-on sentences and comma splices in the introduction and second paragraph, such as 'Everyone in human existence has a different way of thinking and has a different mindset than other people, I personally do believe...'. Furthermore, issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency appear regularly, for example, 'its is positive situation' and 'which will continu in upcoming year'. Although some structures are handled correctly, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation pull the overall accuracy down to a Band 5.0.
