IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, owning a house is considered more important than renting one. this preference is often influenced by financial considerations, cultural values and desire for long term stability. in my view, although owner can provide significant benifits, placing excessive importance on it can also create financial and social burden.

one reason why peaople mostly prefer owning a house provides sense of security to its owners. Homeowners do not have to worry about their landlords increasing their rent or terminating a tenancy, and they can generally modify their property according to their own preferences. Moreover a house is viewed as a long term investment, the the value of the property increases with time. As the value of the property increases, the owners may substancially accumulate more wealth with time. Rent payment normally do not create an asset for tenant. For example many famalies purchase a house early in their working lives and eventually benifit from having a valuable asset that can provide a financial security in retirement.

There are also cultural and emotional reasons for this preferance. In some societies, owning a house is regarded as important foctor of financial success and independence.Parents may also want to leave a property to their children, making home ownership a means of transferring wealth between generations.

overall, I belive that the emphasis on home ownership can be positive when people can afford itwithour exessive financial pressure. However it can become negetive when people take an unaffordable mortgages simply because society considers renting unsuccesfull. Large housing loans may restrict people from their ability to spend save or relocate for better employment opportunities.

In conclusion, the importance attached to owning a home is understandable as it provides sense of security, independence and possibility of growing wealth. Neverthless, it should not be considered universally superior to renting. The most suitable choice ultimately depends on one's individual financial circumstances, career plans and long term priorities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task directly. It explains why owning a home is important (security, investment, cultural values) and provides a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative, arguing that it is beneficial if affordable but negative when it causes excessive financial strain. The position is maintained throughout, and ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as families purchasing houses early in their careers. Although some points could be elaborated further, the task is fully addressed, earning a solid band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific reasons and perspectives, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'There are also', and 'In conclusion'. However, paragraphing and referencing show minor mechanical flaws, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. For instance, the opening paragraph has minor capitalization and punctuation issues that disrupt flow. Overall, the organisation is coherent and provides a clear progression of thought, fitting the descriptors for a band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'financial considerations', 'long term stability', and 'generational wealth'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('benifits', 'peaople', 'substancially', 'famalies', 'foctor', 'negetive', 'Neverthless'), word form errors ('owner' instead of 'homeownership', 'Rent payment' instead of 'Rent payments'), and minor typos. These inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching higher levels. The lexical resource is characteristic of a band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('provides sense of security'), incorrect preposition usage, and run-on structures or missing punctuation (e.g., lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences and missing commas). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. The grammatical control aligns well with the band 6 descriptors.
