IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, particularly in Asia, homeownership is considered a major life goal, while renting is seeing as temporary solution. This perference is driven by cultural and financial factors, i believe that it is largely postive development.

On the one hand, own home is a financial security for a person because they build and design it according to their wishes and taste. They feel comfortable and secure in their home because there are no worries about the landlord kicking you out and rent increase. It is also a type of investment because the prices of property in Pakistan and Globally increase rapidly. As monthly rent is only a waste of money. For instance in many countries it is social status having own home. House is very important part of the human life because it is basic need of life because they happily spend time with family.

On the other hand, the main advantage is long term financial and emotional security. A homeowner does not need to worry about the house in old age a and has an asset to rely on. This peace of mind is invaluable. However, the obession with ownership can have negative consequences. many of the people take a loan for 15 to 20 years which cause a stress for the person because it causes a financial burden on the person life. Furthermore it reduces the mobility of the person because person cannot move to urban areas in search of better oppurtunties.

In conclusion, the people prefer to own a house because of the security, investment vale and socail prestige it offers. despite the financial burden it can create, i think the desireof homeownership is positive because it encourages saving and provides long term stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is important and presenting a clear position that it is largely a positive development. Ideas are relevant, touching upon financial security, emotional stability, and social status, while also acknowledging the downsides such as loan burdens and reduced mobility. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about security and investment are reiterated. For instance, the transition from discussing homeownership as a financial investment to emotional security lacks clear separation, and some generalisations are made regarding Pakistan and global property trends. Overall, the task is fulfilled adequately, earning a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct aspects of the argument, such as the benefits versus the drawbacks. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the use of transition markers is occasionally awkward, such as starting the second body paragraph with 'On the other hand, the main advantage is...' despite having already discussed advantages in the previous paragraph. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are occasionally misused. Progression is evident, but the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs could be tighter. These issues place the response firmly in the band 6.0 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'homeownership', 'financial burden', and 'socail prestige'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'seeing' instead of 'seen', 'perference' instead of 'preference', 'postive' instead of 'positive', and 'obession' instead of 'obsession'. Collocations are sometimes inaccurate, such as 'rent increase' instead of 'rent increases'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, and communication is rarely impeded. This level aligns with the descriptors for a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('rent is seeing as', 'prices of property... increase', 'the people prefer'), missing articles ('in urban areas', 'in search of better oppurtunties'), and awkward phrasing ('i believe that it is largely postive development'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, particularly with the lowercase 'i'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Therefore, a band 6.0 is appropriate.
