IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some Countries having ther own home is very important because it can reduce liablities and it can save a very large sum of expenses. It can be the case however i think its a positive situation .

So according to my perspective it is a positive situation because having you own home can save you from alot of extra expenses and out of thousands of problems you do not have to worry about the house rent. In some countries people people dont get married unless they have built their own home. Owning a home is an excellent thinking and it can save or help you in the future. For example,My aunt had a production business and his business was son good and its scope of future was very bright and she new i have to spent my whole life in this city , therefore she bought a house and got rid of renting and wasting time in looking for good rentals.

If we look from some other perspective ,owning a home is very irational idea. In some countries individuals do not prefer to spend their whole life saving on builting a home. They want to enjoy thier lifes.Owning a home can tie you with hundreds of responsibilities and that can consume alot of your preciou time. Renting a home is a good opinion because you are not bound to live at the same place. For Intance, My Uncle was an engineer and his firm transferd him to another city so he just rented a house in that city rather than selling the previos one purchasing a new home.

In Conclusion, owning and renting a home are both benficial for individuals but this matter depends entirely on situation but according to me renting a home is better and positive situation than owning a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and discussing whether it is a positive or negative situation. The writer takes a clear position, concluding that renting is ultimately better and more positive. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the arguments regarding saving expenses and lifestyle flexibility are introduced but lack deeper elaboration. The examples provided, such as the aunt with the production business and the uncle who is an engineer, are somewhat personal and anecdotal rather than broadly elaborated. Consequently, the ideas are relevant and all parts are addressed, but they tend to be under-developed, aligning best with a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the arguments in favour of buying versus renting. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. There are noticeable issues with referencing, punctuation spacing (such as missing spaces after periods like 'expenses. It' and 'situation .'), and basic conjunction use. Furthermore, transitional phrases like 'So according to my perspective' and 'If we look from some other perspective' are rather basic and repetitive. While the logical progression is generally understandable, the mechanical flaws in cohesive ties and punctuation place this response firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to housing, expenses, and career moves. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'liablities', 'irational', 'builting', 'thier', 'preciou', 'Intance', 'transferd', 'previos', and 'benficial'. Word choices are sometimes unnatural or imprecise, such as calling home ownership 'an excellent thinking' or describing a business scope as 'very bright'. Because these errors in spelling and word choice are noticeable and occur frequently throughout the text, the vocabulary profile reflects Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'If we look from some other perspective, owning a home is very irational idea'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in article usage (e.g., 'is very irational idea', 'in another city'), subject-verb agreement, and capitalization. Punctuation errors are also prominent, particularly missing spaces after commas and periods. Although these errors rarely completely impede communication, their high frequency across the text prevents the response from reaching a higher band level, making a Band 5.0 appropriate.
