IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many parts of the world, people strongly prefer owning a home instead of renting one. This is mainly because owning a property provides people financial security and a greater sense of stability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation because home ownership offers long-term benefits, although buying a house can be financially challenging.
There are several reasons why home ownership is considered important. The main advantage is that owning a house provides financial stability. First of all, people do not have to pay rents throughout their lives. Once a mortgage is fully paid, they can live in their own houses without monthly rental costs. Secondly, a house can be a valueable investment. Prices may increase over time, which allowing owners to benefit financially if they decide to sell their properties in the future. Finally, home owners usually have more freedom to decorate or modify their houses according to their preference.
I belive this is generally a positive development. Due to the fact, ownership offers long-term stability, especially for families with their children. Moreover, people can passed on to their children as an inheritence, which may provide financial support for the next generation. However, purchasing a house can be very expensive, which may require people to tackle a large mortgage. Despite this disadvantages, I believe that ownership may offer numerous benefits, which may outweigh the financial difficulties.
In conclusion, individuals may place greater importance to owning a home becuase it provides financial security, stability and greater freedom. Although, purchasing a house can be very expensive. Consequently, In my perspective, ownership offers greater advantages for individuals and families in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task directly. The student provides clear reasons why owning a home is important, such as financial security and avoiding lifetime rent payments, and explicitly states a position that this is a positive development. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning families and inheritance. However, some arguments like the potential increase in property values could be slightly more extended. The position remains clear throughout the essay, meeting the criteria for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' are utilized to structure the arguments, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement guides the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms like 'financial security', 'mortgage', and 'inheritance'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'valueable' instead of valuable, and minor word-choice or collocation slips, such as 'place greater importance to' instead of 'place greater importance on'. Less common items are attempted with some awareness of style, but occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score, placing this firmly at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses like 'Prices may increase over time, which allowing owners to benefit financially...' where a grammatical error occurs ('which allowing'). There are also fragments and slight punctuation issues, such as 'Due to the fact, ownership offers...'. Despite these errors in grammar, communication is never impeded, and the student demonstrates decent control over basic structures and attempts at complex forms, justifying a score of 6.0.
