IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is considered by some people in some part of the countries that buying a house instead of renting, it is more vital. Because in some of the countries it is difficult to rent a house according to our needs and gives more freedom as owner of the house. In my opinion it is positive trend as it is cost effective in long term and promote infrastructre development of the country.

first and foremost, renting a house in any major cities of the world is highly challenging depending upon person financial power and needs. This is to say, many part of the wolrd still struggles to meet the requirments of housing depending upon their population, hence, there might be less options avaible to rent a house. Furthermore, to rent a home tenants need to meet the regulations sets by the owner. Because many owner rent a house who follow certain rules which ever owner preferre. For example, many owner who is vegetarian preferre to rent a house to people who are vegetarian.

In addition, buying a home is more convenient for people in long term, as property prices will likely to increase by time. Despite of renting and paying rent for a house in the end tenants dont get anything except living for that period. While investing such money to buy a house will give them a property possesion which will be counted as wealth. Thus, it will increase demand of infracture as well, which inspire governments to invest in this sector. And eventually it will help in economical growth of the country. For Instance, many developed countries in the world rely on the real estate construction businesses like dubai, because people want to buy a house there to gain financial profits.

In conclusion, people in some countries preferred to buy a house instead of renting it to by pass hurdles of renting process and total freedom. I believe it is positive trend because it boost financial gain for people as well as for countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear opinion that this is a positive trend. The ideas are generally relevant, such as discussing difficulties in renting, long-term cost-effectiveness, and infrastructure development. However, some arguments are under-developed or repetitive, such as the explanation of landlord restrictions and vegetarian preferences, which lacks broader societal relevance. The position is clear throughout the essay, though the support provided tends to generalise rather than delve into deeper analysis. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and body paragraphs that each focus on a specific aspect of the prompt. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'first and foremost' is used, but paragraph linking could be smoother. Referencing and pronoun use are occasionally unclear, such as 'many owner rent a house who follow certain rules which ever owner preferre.' Paragraphing is used, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the academic task, including terms such as 'cost-effective,' 'infrastructure development,' 'financial profits,' and 'real estate construction.' However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('infrastructre,' 'infracture,' 'economical' instead of 'economic') and word-choice inaccuracies ('person financial power,' 'property possesion'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with some inaccuracy, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 category where the range is adequate for the task, but errors in spelling and collocation occasionally emerge without severely impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures often contain errors. Examples include 'It is considered by some people in some part of the countries that buying a house instead of renting, it is more vital' and 'property prices will likely to increase by time.' There are frequent issues with articles, subject-verb agreement ('many owner... preferre'), and prepositions ('by time' instead of 'over time'). These errors are frequent enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, but communication is not completely impeded, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
