IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Every country has its own particular customs and values, typically with which their government operates independently. For many foreign countries like Australia for instance, people highly prefer owning their own home rather than buying and renting a house they have to pay for every month. The reason behind this mindset holds a wide range of individualism, where individuals can make changes to their own home according to their particular requirements and desires, without any government or public involvement. The rented houses are strictly prohibited to be redesigned or reconstructed without appropriate lawful approach. The government penalty those who dares to change the household features including its infrastructure inside or out. Thus, making it quite hard for people to make typical adjustments while holding back their needs for changes. Although the people can ask for permission to do so but a self-decisive acts regarding the house is a concerning factor and for these particular circumstances, most people strive to have their own homeplace.

The privacy to modify the house according to one's need is also exploited when the owner of the house denies to its permission. This establishes a concept of owning one's own home with self-centred decisions and also it becomes an ultimate asset to an indivudual for a long-term advantage.

I personally believe this is an extremely positive approach which gives the idea of self-sufficiency and confidence to a person who does not need to ask or adjust into a house where renovation can not be done without permission from the legislation or the owner of the house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why homeownership is preferred (autonomy, long-term asset) and giving a clear position that it is a positive situation. The main ideas are relevant and generally supported, such as mentioning the restrictions on rented properties and the psychological benefit of self-sufficiency. However, the development of ideas lacks full clarity and depth in places, with some arguments slightly muddled by phrasing, such as 'The reason behind this mindset holds a wide range of individualism'. The position is maintained throughout, but the reasoning would benefit from broader elaboration. Consequently, the performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors for Task Achievement, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, moving from introduction of the custom to reasons for preferring homeownership, followed by a personal stance. Paragraphing is used, though the second paragraph is quite long and dense, grouping several distinct ideas together rather than separating them effectively. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Thus', 'Although', and 'Furthermore', but referencing is sometimes awkward or mechanical (e.g., 'The rented houses are strictly prohibited... The government penalty those...'). While the progression is generally clear, the lack of refined paragraph breaks and occasional unnatural cohesive links prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. This corresponds to a solid Band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a fair range of vocabulary, including terms like 'individualism', 'reconstructed', 'infrastructure', and 'self-sufficiency'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, imprecise word choices, and collocation issues throughout the text. For example, 'government penalty those', 'homeplace', 'denies to its permission', and 'indivudual' (spelling error). The phrase 'self-decisive acts' is also unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey the general message, these persistent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling place the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range. A score of 6.0 is awarded as the lexical range is adequate for the task despite the noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The government penalty those who dares'), article misuse ('the rented houses', 'a wide range of individualism'), and awkward prepositions or verb complements ('denies to its permission'). Punctuation and sentence structures occasionally become convoluted, making some sentences heavy to read. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from achieving a Band 7.0. The appropriate descriptor match is Band 6.0, which accounts for a mix of structures and some grammar errors that rarely impede understanding.
