IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Every country has its own particular customs and values, typically with which their government operates independently. For many foreign countries like Australia for instance, people highly prefer owning their own home rather than buying and renting a house they have to pay for every month. The reason behind this mindset holds a wide range of individualism, where individuals can make changes to their own home according to their particular requirements and desires, without any government or public involvement. The rented houses are strictly prohibited to be redesigned or reconstructed without appropriate lawful approach. The government penalty those who dares to change the household features including its infrastructure inside or out. Thus, making it quite hard for people to make typical adjustments while holding back their needs for changes. Although the people can ask for permission to do so but a self-decisive acts regarding the house is a concerning factor and for these particular circumstances, most people strive to have their own homeplace.

The privacy to modify the house according to one's need is also exploited when the owner of the house denies to its permission. This establishes a concept of owning one's own home with self-centred decisions and also it becomes an ultimate asset to an indivudual for a long-term advantage.

I personally believe this is an extremely positive approach which gives the idea of self-sufficiency and confidence to a person who does not need to ask or adjust into a house where renovation can not be done without permission from the legislation or the owner of the house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why homeownership is valued (individualism, freedom to modify, long-term asset) and giving a clear personal opinion that it is a positive situation. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive and under-developed, particularly regarding the societal and financial drivers behind homeownership, which places it at Band 6.0. While the student mentions the restriction of rented houses and the desire for self-sufficiency, the explanation remains somewhat generalized. To reach a higher band, the discussion would benefit from more fully developed arguments exploring broader economic or cultural factors, rather than focusing predominantly on the inability to renovate rental properties.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, and the main ideas are generally logical and progressive. Paragraphing is used, though the body of the essay is compressed into only two large paragraphs, making the text feel dense and less structured than it could be. Cohesive devices are attempted with words like 'Thus', 'Although', and 'Furthermore', but some referencing is faulty or mechanical. For instance, 'The government penalty those who dares' contains referencing and agreement errors that disrupt the flow. While logical links are present, the paragraphing and transitional control reflect the descriptors for Band 6 rather than higher levels, where cohesion is managed seamlessly across well-delineated paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'individualism', 'infrastructure', 'self-sufficiency', and 'legislation'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score. Examples include 'The government penalty those who dares' (should be 'penalizes' and 'dare'), 'self-decisive acts' (an awkward collocation), and 'denies to its permission' (incorrect preposition and phrasing). Furthermore, there is a spelling error with 'indivudual'. Because the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main arguments despite these frequent inaccuracies and awkward expressions, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures such as 'where individuals can make changes...' and 'Although the people can ask...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The government penalty those who dares'), awkward passive constructions ('The rented houses are strictly prohibited to be redesigned'), and minor punctuation or prepositions lapses. These errors do not completely impede communication, as the reader can still discern the intended meaning, but they occur frequently enough to place the essay firmly within the Band 6 descriptor range.
