IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In many countries, owning a home is consedered more importat than renting a property. People may prefer home ownership because it provides greater security and is often viewed as a symbol of financial stability and independence. In my opinion, this is generally a positive development because a home ownership can provide long-term financial security and stability for families.
On the one side, the main reason why society prefer private home is that it gives sense of security and independence. Unlike tenants, homeowners do not have to worry about increasing rents, eviction and restrictions imposed by landlords. Furthermore, they have freedom to renovate their property according to their preferences. In many societies, owning a home is the sign of economic responsibility and social stability, and parents often encourage their childeren to purchase their own property as a long-term assets. For instance, a family that have their own house do not hasitate about landlord increasing the montly rent and asking them to leave the property.
On the other hand, I believe that owning a home is generally a positive situation because it provide both finantial and personal stability. Purchasing a property can be a life-long investment, as home owners gradually built equity instead of making regular rental payments without acquiring ownership. In addition, having permanent residence can benefit families because children can remain in the same neighbourhood, attending same schools and develop lasting friendships. For example, a family bthat own a property can provide their children with stable living enviorment throughout their school years, which can contribute their sense of security and well-being.
In conclusion, individual value home ownership because it provide security, independence and the opportunity to built a valuable long-term assets. I think this is overall postive approach because owning a home can strengthen financial stability and provide families with secure and permanent place to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay, stating that home ownership provides security, independence, and financial stability, and argues that this is a positive trend. Ideas are well-extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the discussion of children remaining in the same neighborhood and attending the same schools. Although some minor generalisations appear, the task is comprehensively answered. This aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing the causes and the evaluation, and concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one side', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'For instance' are used to connect ideas effectively, although paragraphing could be slightly more polished. Reference words are used clearly, contributing to the overall readability of the text. This performance sits comfortably at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'financial stability', 'independence', 'equity', and 'long-term investment'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'consedered', 'importat', 'childeren', 'assets' (where singular is needed), 'finantial', 'enviorment', and 'postive'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7. The vocabulary used is sufficiently flexible to convey precise meanings despite the recurring spelling slips, matching Band 6 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses like 'Unlike tenants, homeowners do not have to worry about increasing rents...' and 'a family that have their own house do not hasitate...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'society prefer', 'childeren', 'family that have' instead of 'has', 'family bthat own', and 'contribute their sense' instead of 'contribute to their sense'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occur with enough frequency to place the response at Band 6.
