IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Owning a home has a lot of significance over renting a house in several countries as people want to make assets and to live freely without having stress of giving rent to the landlord. From my perspetive, owning a house is counted as asset which is valuable and you can rent out it or live in where as some people cannot afford to buy a house so they rent the house.

Some individuals do not have higher paid job as a result they cannot buy a house for themselves. So, in that case they need to rent a house to live. Tenant needs to pay the rent everymonth and have to lookafter the house. This is easier for lower or middle class people. For instance, my friend parents can not afford to buy so they are living in the rented house. But her parents want to buy a house so that they donot have to pay rents. Additionaly, if her father lose a job so they donot have to take any stress related to payment of rent.

The people who owns a house count it as asset for them because if they die their children will have something which is valuable. They will shelter where they can live.Meanwhile, if their paents didn't have a house and die ,the children will suffer a lot. So thats the reason majority of people have opinion of owning a house. From my perspective, it seems to me that it is positive situation to want to have a house of their own.

In conclusion, owning a house has a significant amount of importance in every person life. They will decorate it as they want and will have no stress of paying the rent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear personal perspective that it is a positive situation. The ideas are relevant, noting financial security and asset building. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth, relying on simple explanations and personal anecdotes such as 'my friend parents can not afford to buy'. While the position is clear throughout, the support remains basic and tends to over-generalise. Consequently, the response aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors, as it addresses the prompt adequately but needs more fully extended and sophisticated supporting arguments to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The writer relies on basic cohesive devices like 'So', 'Meanwhile', and 'In conclusion', and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'live in where as some people'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed due to abrupt shifts between ideas. There is a lack of sophisticated transitions, and repetition of ideas hampers the logical progression. These features are characteristic of Band 5, though the overall structure keeps it near the boundary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic ideas about housing and renting. There are attempts to use less common items such as 'significance', 'asset', and 'significant amount of importance', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, for instance, 'giving rent', 'higher paid job', and 'They will shelter'. Spelling errors, such as 'perspetive', 'everymonth', 'lookafter', 'Additionaly', and 'paents', occur throughout the text. Although the meaning remains understandable, the limited range and frequent inaccuracies place this performance firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Some individuals do not have higher paid job as a result they cannot buy a house'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is weak, with frequent errors including missing articles ('a higher paid job', 'the rented house'), run-on sentences, incorrect verb forms ('if their father lose a job'), and punctuation omissions. While simple sentences are often clear, attempts at complex structures frequently result in faulty grammar that can cause some difficulty for the reader. These characteristics correspond directly to the Band 5 descriptors.
