IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several nations, people consider homeownership an important instead of a rented house. This is because owning a home gives individuals a sense of financial stability and personal security. However, I believe that I had both advantages and disadvantages.

There are two main reasons why people prefer to buy their own home. Firstly, having homeownership considered the sign of success and stability. People who have their own house are far away from giving rents to landlords. Therefore, having their own property is a pride and sense of belonging for a family, while a rented house is considered a temporary place for living. Secondly, there are various financial reasons why people prefer to buy their own place for living, because they know that giving rent is a waste of money with no financial benefits. Moreover, people buy houses because they know that after sometime they get financial benefits as the property rates increase day by day.

There are also some positive outcomes of having your own house. People decorate and renovate their property with freedom as they are not answerable to anybody. However, this also built strong connections with neighbors because people who have their own house prefer to live in that particular place for several years, and this will aid in personal and emotional bonding with the neighborhood. There are several drawbacks because increasing property rates build pressure on young minds and they might buy heavy loans and face financial stress for many years. Another reason is that the younger generation might face delays in buying their own home due to higher tax and to manage a lot of money this may cause anxiety in them.

In conclusion, people prefer to buy their own property because this will lead to cultural and financial stability and long term assert. However, it also creates financial pressure, I believe that it is a positive way out because it offers long term security.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task, discussing both why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. In the introduction, the writer attempts to state a position ('I believe that I had both advantages and disadvantages'), but this phrasing is awkward and imprecise. The body paragraphs successfully outline reasons for buying a home, such as financial stability and freedom of renovation, alongside drawbacks like financial pressure and debt. However, some ideas lack full extension and suffer from minor generalisations. For example, the claim that renting is always a 'waste of money' is a common over-generalization. Despite these limitations, the response covers the prompt adequately, earning a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a discernible focus, starting with reasons for buying homes, moving to positive and negative outcomes, and concluding with a summary. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as the repetitive use of 'Secondly' and 'Another reason is'. Paragraphing is utilized, but the transition between the positive and negative outcomes within the third paragraph is abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'this also built strong connections'. Overall, the organization is logical, but the management of cohesive ties prevents it from reaching a higher band, justifying a score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'financial stability', 'homeownership', 'renovate their property', and 'financial stress'. However, there are notable word-choice errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'buy heavy loans' instead of 'take out heavy loans' or 'incur substantial debt', and 'long term assert' instead of 'long-term asset'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical inaccuracies restrict the precision of the argument. Because the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning despite these errors, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'People who have their own house are far away from giving rents...'). However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing occur with some frequency. Examples include 'having homeownership considered the sign' (passive voice error), 'a temporary place for living' (unnatural prepositional phrase), and 'to manage a lot of money this may cause anxiety in them' (run-on/faulty structure). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are persistent enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. A score of 6.0 reflects this mix of structures and error frequency.
