IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In several nations, people consider homeownership more important than renting a house. This is because owning a home gives individuals a sense of financial stability and personal security. I believe this situation has both advantages and disadvantages, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
There are two main reasons why people prefer to buy their own home. Firstly, having homeownership considered the sign of success and stability. People who have their own house are far away from giving rents to landlords. Therefore, having their own property is a pride and sense of belonging for a family, while a rented house is considered a temporary place for living. Secondly, there are various financial reasons why people prefer to buy their own place for living, because they know that giving rent is a waste of money with no financial benefits. Moreover, people buy houses because they know that after sometime they get financial benefits as the property rates increase day by day.
There are positive outcomes to having your own house. People can decorate and renovate their property freely as they are not answerable to anyone. Also, it builds strong connections with neighbours because homeowners prefer to live in one place for several years, which aids emotional bonding. However, there are also drawbacks. Increasing property prices put pressure on young people, and they might take out large loans and face financial stress for many years. The younger generation might also face delays in buying their own home due to high costs, which may cause anxiety.
In conclusion, people prefer to buy their own property because this will lead to cultural and financial stability and a long-term asset. However, it also creates financial pressure, I believe that it is a positive way out because it offers long term security.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons for the importance of homeownership and whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position from the beginning and maintains it throughout. In the second paragraph, the reasons for valuing homeownership are discussed, noting financial stability and psychological security. The third paragraph addresses both the advantages, such as freedom to renovate and community bonding, and the disadvantages, including financial pressure on younger generations. While some ideas could be extended further, the coverage is comprehensive enough to meet the requirements of Band 7. The main arguments are relevant, well-selected, and structured effectively to answer both questions posed in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, reasons for homeownership, positive and negative outcomes, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the text, as seen with transition markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Also', and 'However'. However, some cohesive phrasing feels slightly mechanical, such as 'There are positive outcomes to having your own house' followed immediately by 'There are also drawbacks'. Paragraphing is utilized appropriately to divide distinct ideas, and referencing remains clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of arguments from one point to the next, aligning with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing topic-specific terms such as 'financial stability', 'property rates', 'renovate', and 'long-term asset'. Less common lexical items are attempted with varying success, though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'giving rents' instead of 'paying rent' and 'homeownership considered the sign' with missing auxiliary verbs. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and meaning is communicated clearly without strain. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate throughout the response, supporting a solid Band 6.5 or 7 performance, comfortably landing at Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts various complex structures, such as relative clauses ('People who have their own house...') and conditional ideas, which show a broader grammatical range. There are several noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing auxiliary verbs ('having homeownership considered the sign'), awkward prepositions ('place for living' instead of 'place to live'), and a run-on sentence in the conclusion ('However, it also creates financial pressure, I believe...'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear. The control of grammar aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.
